Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and Pacific notched first round wins to kick off the 2013 Big West Men's Tennis Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Thursday.

Cal Poly knocked off UC Riverside, 4-0, in the first round of the Big West Men's Tennis Championship Thursday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.alt

The Mustangs claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.  Gannon Daynes and Naveen Beasley downed Luis Gastao and Calvin Ngo by an 8-5 score to clinch the point.

Three straight set wins sealed the match for the Mustangs.  Beasley was the first Mustang off the court with his 6-0, 6-1 triumph against Marcus Vizcarra.  No. 29-ranked Andre Dome breezed to a 6-0, 6-2 win against Jimmy Roberts at No. 1, while Jordan Bridge won his match at No. 3, collecting a 6-3, 6-0 victory versus Julian Ruffin.

Cal Poly improved to 14-8 and UC Riverside ended its season at 3-21.  The Mustangs advance to Friday's semifinals at 3:00 p.m. against the winner of Pacific/UC Davis.

Pacific Squeezes Past UC Davis, 4-2

Third-seeded Pacific grappled with UC Davis in a tight first round matchup of the Big West Men's Tennis Championship, but eventually sent the sixth-seeded Aggies home with a 4-2 victory at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Thursday.alt

The Tigers found themselves in an early 1-0 hole as the Aggies won two tiebreakers in the doubles.  Brett Bacharach and Parker Kelley notched a 9-8 (2) win at No. 3 over Daniel Alameh and Erik Cederwall to offset Pacific's win at No. 2.  That left the point in the hands of Toki Sherbakov and Adam Levie, who eked out a 9-8 (6) victory at No. 1 over Sem Verbeek and Denis Stolyarov.

Singles play featured several close battles, including a pair of three-set matches.  But first the Tigers restored order with two straight set wins at No. 2 and No. 6, as Alex Golding defeated Kyle Miller 6-4 and 6-1 while Ben Mirkin dispatched Hugo Verdi-Fortin 7-6 (5), 6-1.

UC Davis quickly responded at No. 6 with George Horowitz claiming a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Cederwall.

With the match even at 2-2, the Tigers came up with a couple of clutch victories to earn the win.

Stolyarov recovered from a first set defeat to beat Kelley by a 2-6, 6-4, 1 score at No. 3 to put Pacific up 3-2.

Alameh then outlasted Bacharach 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 4 to clinch the match.

The Tigers upped their record to 15-8 while the Aggies concluded their season at 8-13.

Pacific takes on No. 2 seed Cal Poly in the semifinals at 3:00 p.m. Friday.

UC Santa Barbara Knocks Off Hawai’i

No. 5 seed UC Santa Barbara pulled off a 4-2 upset of No. 4 seed Hawai’i  to conclude first round action of the Big West Men's Tennis Championship Thursday.alt

The Gauchos improved to 10-13 on the year and advanced to Friday's semifinals, where they will face top-seeded UC Irvine at 3:00 p.m.  The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 7-13 as they finished their season.

UCSB captured the doubles point for the 1-0 advantage, with Benjamin Recknagel and Axel Bouillin toppling Nils Schuhmann and Carter Lam, 8-6, at No. 2 for the clincher.

In singles action, UCSB was tough in the middle of the order to stave off a game UH squad.

Ziad Sultan notched a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 over UH's Chas Okamoto to give the Gauchos a 2-0 lead.  At No. 3, Bouillin downed Jared Spiker 6-2, 6-4 for a commanding 3-0 edge.

But UH did not go down quietly as Danilo Casanova posted a 6-3, 6-3 triumph against Chase Johnson at No. 6, followed by Dmytro Kovalyov's 7-5, 6-3 win over Recknagel at No. 2.

With tight matches taking place at No. 1 and No. 5, UCSB finished out the match when Alexander Gryaznov overcame Schuhmann 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the bottom of the lineup.
