Big West At A Glance

• UC Santa Barbara handed fourth-ranked Cal State Fullerton its first conference loss of the season with a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon.  Despite the loss, the Titans remain atop the Big West standings with an 8-1 record.  They are followed by No. 16 Cal Poly, Long Beach State and UC Riverside, who find themselves knotted in second place with a 6-3 mark.  The Mustangs host league-leading Cal State Fullerton this weekend in a three-game series with start times of 6:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

• The College Baseball Hall of Fame announced the initial National Pitcher of the Year watch list and the Big West Conference nabbed three spots on the 41-person list.  Cal State Fullerton duo Thomas Eshelman and Michael Lorenzen and UC Irvine’s Andrew Morales make up the trio.  Eshelman paces the conference with an impressive 1.09 earned run average in 66.0 innings pitched and Morales sits third with a 1.56 mark while posting a conference-best eight wins.  Lorenzen, a two-way player, ranks among the top in the country and leads the Big West with 12 saves.

• UC Riverside swept the Pacific Tigers last weekend keeping its perfect record intact with an 11-0 mark.  The Highlanders play one more contest at the Riverside Sports Complex Tuesday evening before hitting the road for a weekend series at UC Davis.

• In Saturday’s Hawai’i at Cal Poly contest, the Mustangs defeated the Rainbow Warriors 3-2 in 1-hour and 57-minutes, the quickest game in the 13-year history of Baggett Stadium, bettering by one minute Cal Poly’s 4-2 win over UC Davis on May 14, 2011.

• UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton continue to rank among the best in the country in earned run average.  The Anteaters sit seventh with a 2.41 ERA and are followed by the Titans, who are led by a pair of freshmen, in 10th place with a 2.52 mark.

• Titan Michael Lorenzen notched another save this weekend, increasing his league-leading season total to 12. He currently owns 28 career saves, ranking him sixth in the Big West annals.

• UC Irvine defensive continues to shine as it ranks second in the country in field percentage with a .984 clip.

• Over the next month, fans will be able to watch Big West baseball on the small screen as ESPNU is set to broadcast the Long Beach State-Cal State Fullerton matchup on May 4 and the UC Irvine-Cal State Fullerton showdown on May 17.  Both contests take place at Goodwin Field, home of the Titans, at 8:00 p.m.  Fox Sports West has selected the May 18 contest between the Anteaters and Titans which will air at 6:00 p.m.
