Three Schools Send Contingents To Mondo Invitational: Cal Poly, UC Davis and Hawai’i are sending competitors to the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge hosted by Sacramento State this week.  The meet begins on Thursday with the decathlon and heptathlon.  The Rainbow Wahine will send four athletes – senior Amanda Alvarez, senior Samantha Balentine, junior Kaleigh Morrison and sophomore Zhane Santiago to the multi-event competition.  In addition to the three Big West contingents and the host Hornets, the meet also features BYU, Utah State, Portland State, Montana State, Detroit and Nevada.  Along with the collegiate athletes, several notable post collegiate competitors will participate including Cal Poly alumnus Stephanie Brown-Trafton, who is an Olympic gold medalist and U.S. record holder in the women’s discus.

Cal State Northridge Heads To Texas Invitational: Cal State Northridge will send both its men’s and women’s teams to Austin, Texas for the Texas Invitational Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.  In addition to the host No. 7 Longhorn women, the eight-team, non-scored meet will feature a pair of Big 12 foes in No. 14 Texas Tech and No. 24 Baylor, as well as the Matadors, Houston, TCU, UT-San Antonio and Texas State.  The Texas Tech men are also ranked No. 14 and Baylor is No. 19.

UC Riverside Makes Short Trek To Pomona-Pitzer Invitational:
A trip to nearby Claremont is on the ledger for the UC Riverside track and field program as both squads are participating in the 27th Annual Pomona Pitzer Invitational Saturday.  The opportunity for UC Riverside senior Travis Smith to break his shot put record again is on display.  Smith bettered his record of 60-7.25 (18.47m) by more than a foot with a winning throw of 61-8.25 (18.80m) in the Premiere Section of the 2013 Sun Angel Classic last weekend.

Big West Athletes Post National Marks:
Eight men and eight women have posted marks that rank in the top 25 nationally.  UC Riverside senior Travis Smith is the highest-ranked Big West men’s athlete at No. 6 in the country after he threw 61-8.25 in the shot put at the Sun Angel Classic on April 5.  Amanda Alvarez of Hawai’i boasts a No. 7 national ranking in the triple jump with her leap of 42-9.5 on March 29 at the Stanford Invitational.  The UC Davis women have five runners in the top 25 in events ranging from the 200m to the 3,000 steeplechase.

Recapping The 2012 Big West Championships:
The UC Davis women and UC Santa Barbara men captured the first team titles in their program histories to highlight action at the 2012 Big West Track and Field Championships.  The Aggies won by just one-half point over runner-up UC Santa Barbara – 170-169.50 – helped by first place finishes in the 100m and 200m by Melanise Chapman.  Sarah Sumpter also helped UCD with her second meet record at the championships, running a 16:35.07 in the 5,000 meters and erasing the old mark of 16:38.19 held by Beth McGrann in 1989.

UC Santa Barbara outdistanced runner-up Long Beach State by 29 points to capture the men’s title.  The marquee event involved the Gauchos as Ryan Martin lined up against rival Charles Jock of UC Irvine in the 800 meters.  Jock won by a narrow two one-hundredths of a second at the finish line in a memorable race by two of the top runners in the country.

Big West Track & Field Championship Heads To Northridge: After a two-year stint at UC Irvine, the 2013 Big West Track and Field Championships head to Cal State Northridge.  The 2013 championship begins with the multi-events on May 3-4 and continues with the bulk of the events on May 10-11.  Fox Sports Prime Ticket will televise the finals on Saturday, May 11.
