UC Irvine, Long Beach State Look To Extend Winning Streaks

Tennis Weekly Release No. 14

Terrific seasons from two of the nation's top women's tennis programs continue this week as UC Irvine and Long Beach State, with identical 17-3 overall records, seek to extend winning streaks that stand at 15 and nine straight, respectively.

Winning Streaks Continue For Anteaters, 49ers
UC Irvine and Long Beach State own identical 17-3 overall records going into the regular season stretch run with both teams carrying one match on their schedules this week.  The Anteaters take their 6-0 conference record into a Friday match at UC Riverside.  In addition to trying to keep an unblemished Big West record, the Anteaters look to extend their 15-match winning streak.  UCI is ranked No. 31 this week by the ITA.alt
LBSU has won nine straight entering its final regular season match.  The 49ers take on Cal Poly at home, where they are 10-0 this season.  A win would give the 49ers an 8-1 conference record.  LBSU can finish no worse than the No. 2 seed for the Big West Tournament.

Big West Play Continues To Heat Up
The race for the Big West men’s and women’s regular season titles ramps up further as the majority of the action centers around league matchups.

The men’s title is up for grabs with several clubs seeking to hunt down first place Pacific.  The Tigers won earlier battles against UC Davis and Hawai’i to start out conference play 2-0.  Pacific hosts a couple of formidable opponents in Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara this week with successful outcomes going a long way to winning the title and wrapping up the No. 1 seed in the Big West Tournament in two weeks.  The Tigers, which are ranked No. 66 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, have won seven of their last eight contests.  They are 4-1 on their current seven-match homestand which concludes with the UCSB and CP matches.

Sudden upstart UC Irvine became involved the title conversation after spinning a road sweep against contenders Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara last week.  The Anteaters registered back-to-back wins for the first time all season as they return to non-conference action this week against San Diego State and UC San Diego.  Continued momentum would give UCI a strong shot at the top spot in the Big West with matches against UC Riverside, Pacific and UC Davis closing out the regular season schedule.

Dome, Smith Ranked In Singles
Cal Poly senior Andre Dome and UC Irvine senior Kristina Smith are rolling along with impressive seasons that have them being recognized in the national rankings.  Dome is No. 31 in the ITA men’s singles rankings, while Smith owns the No. 92 slot on the women’s side.

A Decade At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 10th consecutive year.  One of the premier facilities in the United States that also hosts the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all seven men’s and 10 women’s teams from April 25-28.  The Long Beach State women won the tournament championship for the eighth time in the last nine years, while the Cal Poly men captured the title for the first time in program history.
