Big West At A Glance

• No 4. Cal State Fullerton, No. 17 Cal Poly and UC Riverside were all perfect in the opening weekend of Big West play.  The Titans swept Pacific and the Mustangs knocked off UC Davis. For the first time in school history the Highlanders opened Big West play with a three-game series sweep and did so by defeating No. 21 UC Irvine, improving their home record to 7-0.

• The start of Big West play had a little of everything for the avid baseball fan, including a grand slam, hitting for the cycle and inside-the-park home runs.  The potent offense of Cal State Fullerton was front and center this weekend in its series versus Pacific.  On Friday night, freshman Jake Jefferies hit for a natural cycle with a two-run single in the first, two-run double in the third, a one-run triple in the fifth and a two-run homer in the sixth.  The following day, junior Michael Lorenzen blasted a grand slam, the third Titan grand slam of the season, in Cal State Fullerton’s 25-0 victory over Pacific.  The Titans’ 25 runs were the most since a 27-2 victory over Cal Poly on May 1, 2004.

Adding more excitement to opening weekend were Pacific’s Brett Sullivan and Long Beach State’s Michael Hill, who both registered inside-the-park home runs on Friday night.

• Proving the competition is tough in the Big West Conference this season, five of the 15 contests played this weekend were one-run decisions, which included a 13-inning, 6-5, victory for Cal Poly over UC Davis.

• The fourth-ranked Titans face their first ranked opponent in a month this Tuesday when they travel to Los Angeles to battle No. 10 UCLA.  Cal State Fullerton is 5-1 against the Top 25 this season.

Big West Among The Best:  Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside rank among the best in the country in triples as the Titans are tied for fifth with 16 and the Highlanders are knotted in 15th with 13.  The Titan pitching staff averages 1.6 walks per nine innings and a 4.67 strikeout-to-walk ratio to pace the nation, while UC Irvine sits seventh and fifth in the same respective categories.  The ‘Eaters also shine defensively, ranking among the best in fielding percentage with a .988 clip. Cal Poly finds themselves ranked seventh in the national statistics in strikeouts per nine innings with 9.2.

• Big West.TV brings together live and on-demand video from each of the Big West’s 10 member institutions.  Now in its eighth year, BigWest.TV covers Big West sports, press conferences, interviews and features, including every home and conference contest in women’s volleyball as well as men’s and women’s basketball.  Also covered are select contests in men’s and women’s soccer, baseball, softball and Big West Championships.
