Various Squads Compete at Cal/Nevada Invitational:
In addition to the Stanford Invitational, Cal Poly, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara will also send student-athletes to compete at the Cal/Nevada Invitational in San Diego, Calif.  Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside will send full squads to the Cal/Nevada Invitational.  Cal State Northridge and UC Davis will also have competitors at the SF State Distance Carnival in San Francisco, Calif.

Big West Athletes Ranked Among Nation’s Best: Several Big West athletes have turned in impressive performances on a national scale during the first month of the outdoor season.  UC Santa Barbara sophomore Shyan Vaziri owns the nation’s fourth-best mark in the 1,500 with a 3:47.86 at the UC Irvine Spring Break Classic on Mar. 22.  Cal Poly sophomore Blake Ahrold traversed the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:04.31 to capture the Cal Poly/ShareSlo.com Invitational, and that mark also placed him No. 7 nationally.  UC Santa Barbara junior Bryce Rausa is not far behind with a 9:07.68 at the UC Irvine Spring Break Classic to rank No. 9 in the country in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.  Gaucho teammate senior Mitchell Haag possesses the 10th-best high jump mark, a 7-0.25 leap on Mar. 2 at the All-Cal Challenge Cup.  Mustang teammate John Prader is tied for second in the nation in the pole vault with a mark of 18-0.5.  Cal State Northridge sophomore Nicholas DiMartino jumped 24-03 in the long jump at the Northridge Invitational to command the ninth-best mark in Division I so far.  Meanwhile, Long Beach State senior Michael Vaughan ranks third nationally in the triple jump with a leap of 51-7.25, set at the Beach Classic on Mar. 1.  UC Riverside senior Travis Smith is one of the latest additions to the list as his toss of 60-03 in the shot put ranks him No. 8.  He set the mark at the UCI Spring Break Classic.

On the women’s side, UC Riverside senior Damajeria DuBose finished her 800-meter race in 2:08.48 at the UCI Spring Break Classic for the nation’s ninth-fastest time.  UC Davis sophomore Raquel Lambdin had a 4:24.07 in the 1,500-meters in the Hornet Invitational to rank No. 7 nationally.  The Aggies also feature two of the top 5,000-meter performers in junior Alycia Cridebring and senior Sarah Sumpter, who rank three and four in the country.  UC Santa Barbara senior Cassie Brooker posted a mark of 10:44.41 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the All-Cal Challenge Cup, which qualifies No. 9 nationally.  Senior Jazmine Lewis of the Highlanders had a score of 4,856 points at the Aztec Invitational and freshman Tori Usgaard of the Gauchos posted 4,812 points at the Northridge Invitational Multi-Event competition.  They rank fifth and sixth in the nation, respectively.

Recapping The 2012 Big West Championships:  The UC Davis women and UC Santa Barbara men captured the first team titles in their program histories to highlight action at the 2012 Big West Track and Field Championships.  The Aggies won by just one-half point over runner-up UC Santa Barbara – 170-169.50 – helped by first place finishes in the 100m and 200m by Melanise Chapman.  Sarah Sumpter also helped UCD with her second meet record at the championships, running a 16:35.07 in the 5,000 meters and erasing the old mark of 16:38.19 held by Beth McGrann in 1989.

UC Santa Barbara outdistanced runner-up Long Beach State by 29 points to capture the men’s title.  The marquee event involved the Gauchos as Ryan Martin lined up against rival Charles Jock of UC Irvine in the 800 meters.  Jock won by a narrow two one-hundredths of a second at the finish line in a memorable race by two of the top runners in the country.

Big West Track & Field Championship Heads To Northridge: After a two-year stint at UC Irvine, the 2013 Big West Track and Field Championships head to Cal State Northridge.  The 2013 championship begins with the multi-events on May 3-4 and continues with the bulk of the events on May 10-11.
