UC Santa Barbara Plays Four Matches In Busy Week

3/27/2013

Tennis Weekly Release No. 12

The UC Santa Barbara men play four matches in five days to highlight a busy week of tennis for the Big West.  The week is also highlighted by the first Big West men's contest in more than a month as Hawai’i hosts UC Riverside.

BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

Light Week Of Women’s Tennis Action
A mere five contests dot the Big West women’s tennis schedule this week as some schools break for finals.  Portland travels to Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara, while Cal State Northidge hosts No. 20-ranked Rice in nonconference action.  A couple of key conference matches also take place with UC Santa Barbara travelling to Hawai’i and Long Beach State hosting Cal State Northridge.

First place UC Irvine is idle. The Anteaters (16-3, 5-0 Big West) are sizzling hot with a 14-match win streak.  They just went unbeaten during a nine-match homestand and finished a perfect 8-0 in the month of March.  UCI, which is a unblemished 12-0 at home, has completed nonconference play and now turns its attention to four straight Big West matches to finish out the regular season.  The Anteaters break until April 6 when they visit Cal State Northridge.

Long Beach State (13-3, 4-1 Big West) also is playing at a high level with wins in five straight and 11 of its last 13 matches.  The 49ers take a 9-0 home record into Saturday’s conference showdown versus Cal State Northridge as they conclude a six-match homestand.  LBSU is No. 41 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll and continues to apply pressure to No. 28-ranked UC Irvine, which beat the 49ers on March 2.

UC Santa Barbara Men Embark On Long Roadtripalt
UC Santa Barbara has played the fewest matches (11) to this point of the season of any of the Big West men’s programs, but that is going to change this week.  The Gauchos play four matches in a five-day period on the road, starting with contests against Utah State and No. 48 Boise State in Boise, Idaho.  UCSB is then off for a travel day before heading to the state of Colorado to face Denver and Air Force.  The Gauchos have been idle for nearly two weeks, but are coming off a win over their first ranked opponent of 2013, a 6-1 rout of No. 49 George Washington on Mar. 14.

Men’s Conference Play Resumes
The men have not played a Big West match since Pacific traveled to Hawai’i for a Feb. 15 match.  The Rainbow Warriors once again are involved when Big West play resumes this Saturday as hosts to UC Riverside.  It is the first match for UH since hosting Idaho on Mar. 15.  The match against the Highlanders will be UH’s last at home as the team finishes up the regular season with five straight on the road.  UC Riverside picked up an additional opponent on the trip to the islands with a Thursday match against Hawaii Pacific on tap.

A Decade At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 10th consecutive year.  One of the premier facilities in the United States that also hosts the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all seven men’s and 10 women’s teams from April 25-28.  The Long Beach State women won the tournament championship for the eighth time in the last nine years, while the Cal Poly men captured the title for the first time in program history.
