3/21/2013

Tennis Weekly Release No. 11

No. 23 UC Irvine, No. 41 Long Beach State and No. 67 UC Santa Barbara represent the Big West in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association women's rankings.  Under first year head coach Simon Thibodeau, the Gauchos get to gauge their progress in a tough nonconference test against No. 26 Oklahoma this week.

BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

UC Irvine Women’s Win Streak Climbs To 11 Straight
UC Irvine continues to excel on the court as three victories last week increased its winning streak to 11 straight matches.  The Anteaters dispatched Marquette, No. 71 Louisville and Big West foe UC Davis to improve to 6-0 on a current nine-match homestand.  In addition, the win over the Aggies kept UCI in first place in the Big West with a 4-0 record.

UCI has five wins against ranked opponents this season in building a 13-3 record.  The Anteaters have downed No. 55 Tulane, No. 33 Pepperdine, No. 46, No. 39 Long Beach State and No. 71 Louisville.  The program remained at No. 23 in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.  The ranking is the best in school history, eclipsing the previous highwater mark of No. 27 reached in March of 2009.  The Anteaters take on another busy week with three home matches in three days.  UCI starts out Saturday with a Big West tilt against Pacific and then faces Wyoming and Sacramento State in nonconference action.

Long Beach State Flexes Muscle

Long Beach State is picking up momentum as the Big West Tournament draws closer.  The 49ers have reeled off four straight wins, including three against ranked opponents, since dropping back-to-back contests to North Carolina State and UC Irvine.  LBSU has defeated No. 45 Boston College, No. 71 Louisville and No. 74 Iowa in bettering its record to 12-3 overall.  The 49ers host Wyoming Friday as they continue a six-match homestand.

Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara Women Continue To Play Wellalt
Cal State Fullerton knocked off Colorado State Wednesday to improve to 2-1 on a seven-match home swing.  The win also upped the Titans’ overall record to 9-9.  The nine victories represent the most for the program since the 2004 squad concluded the year at 12-10.  The Titans continue a busy week with matches against Wyoming and Pacific.  Meanwhile, first year head coach Simon Thibodeau has his UC Santa Barbara squad playing well, leading them to wins in six of the last eight matches.  The Gauchos encounter a tough test Sunday when they host No. 26 Oklahoma.

Light Week Of Action For Big West Men
Pacific and Cal Poly play five of the seven men’s matches on this week’s schedule as finals week has some teams idle.  The Tigers host Iowa, No. 56 New Mexico and Gonzaga in the continuation of a seven-match home block while the 67th-ranked Mustangs battle Portland and Tulane at home.

A Decade At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 10th consecutive year.  One of the premier facilities in the United States that also hosts the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all seven men’s and 10 women’s teams from April 25-28.  The Long Beach State women won the tournament championship for the eighth time in the last nine years, while the Cal Poly men captured the title for the first time in program history.
