BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

UC Irvine Women Take Control Of Race, Reach Highest Ranking Since 2009
UC Irvine handed Long Beach State just its third Big West regular season loss in seven-plus years to assume control of the conference race.  The Anteaters eked out a 4-3 victory Saturday as Kristina Smith defeated Klaudia Malenovska at No. 1 singles to clinaltch the win.  UCI improved to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the Big West, while the 49ers saw their 15-match conference win streak extinguished.  LBSU is now 8-3 overall and 4-1 in league matches.

The Anteaters, riding a seven-match win streak that matches its best streak since 2009, moved up to No. 24 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.  It is UCI’s highest ranking since March of 2009 when the program reached No. 27 nationally.

UCI is in the midst of a nine-match homestand that encompasses the entire month of March.  The Anteaters play three matches in a four-day stretch with SMU, Marquette and No. 58 Louisville visiting.  UCI faces the Mustangs on Sunday.

Long Beach State (No. 41) and UC Santa Barbara (No. 56) are also ranked in this week’s ITA poll.

Cal Poly Men Test Ranking Against Tough Opponent
Cal Poly, No. 55 in the ITA poll, returns to action on Monday, March 11 for a tough battle against No. 35 Middle Tennessee.  The Mustangs are off to a solid 6-3 start but have not seen action since February 23 against DePaul.  Senior Andre Dome ranks No. 32 nationally in singles.

Busy Week For Men Includes More Battles Against Ranked Foes
Beginning on Friday, the Big West men’s teams will play 13 matches over four days.  UC Irvine travels to Las Vegas to tangle with Ball State and No. 68 UNLV.  UC Santa Barbara also hosts No. 36 San Diego State and Utah.  Hawai’i, which is in the midst of a four-match roadtrip to California, finishes out the swing with contests against Fresno State and No. 25 Washington. Northern California competitors UC Davis and Pacific also gets a respite from the road after playing almost its entire schedule to this point in enemy territory.  The Aggies, having played eight of their last nine on the road, host Nevada and Texas-Arlington.  The Tigers travelled for nine of their first 10 matches and emerged with a 6-4 record.  Pacific plays three matches this week, sandwiching a road contest at Santa Clara with home tilts against Northern Arizona and Texas-Arlington.

A Decade At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 10th consecutive year.  One of the premier facilities in the United States that also hosts the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all seven men’s and 10 women’s teams from April 25-28.  The Long Beach State women won the tournament championship for the eighth time in the last nine years, while the Cal Poly men captured the title for the first time in program history.
