Big West Battles Begin in the Water

Big West opener kicked off with the top teams UC Irvine and San Diego State battling for the third time this season, tied 1-1 in tournament play going into the match last week. The Anteaters prevailed after an early 4-1 lead in the second period, although the Aztecs rallied back, they were unable to close as UC Irvine took the 6-5 favor. Big West matchups will continue this week with Cal State Northridge hosting UC Davis (3/8) and San Diego State (3/9) and UC Santa Barbara welcomes UC Davis (3/9).
BIG WEST TOP IN COUNTRY
In all the Big West went 13-1 last week, the only loss being a conference matchup. Going into league play all eight teams are above .500 and ranked in the top-20 of the Collegiate Water Polo Association. UC Irvine continues to lead the way ranked No. 6, with San Diego State in seventh, Hawai’i following in the eighth position and Long Beach State in at 9. Davis slotted at No. 13, with Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara knotted at 15, Pacific closes at No. 20 respectively.
KLATT CLOSES IN ON RECORD
Irvine head coach Dan Klatt is just 3 overall wins short of his 100th win in the Big West. Klatt has been with the Big West since 2009 leading all current coaches in overall (97) and conference (18) wins. The Anteaters will have two matches this week to get Coach Klatt just one win shy of his milestone, Occidental (3/8) and Pomona-Pitzer (3/8).
UC IRVINE TO HOST BIG WEST TOURNAMENT
The Anteaters will host this season’s post-season tournament at the Anteater Aquatics Complex, April 26-28th. The ‘Eaters have dominated all four seasons as tournament champs.
