Big West At A Glance

• UC Davis’ Demi Runas, who just yesterday collected her fourth consecutive Big West Women’s Golfer of the Month award dating back to April of 2012, is ranked 13th in the country in the latest Golfweek rankings (Feb. 27).  In the month of February,  Runas has continued her successful senior campaign by tying for second place at both the Peg Barnard Invitational and Cal Classic.  She currently paces the Big West Conference with an impressive 72.1 stroke average.  As a team, the Aggies are ranked 19th in the Golfweek ratings.

• The UC Irvine men’s golf team is set to host its annual collegiate event March 25-26 with the Anteater Invitational.  This year’s tournament takes place at the El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Niguel, Calif.  Other Big West teams competing in this two-day event are Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara.

• The Rainbow Wahine of Hawai’i host the 2013 Anuenue Spring Break Classic March 25-27 at the Kapalua Bay Course in Kapalua, Maui.  The 18-team field will play 18 holes each day on the 6,022 yard, 72-par course.  Joining host Hawai’i in the spring event are Arizona State, Colorado, Denver, Fresno State, Hawai’i-Hilo, Nevada, Oregon, Oregon State, Osaka Gakuin, Pepperdine, Portland State, San Jose State, Stanford, Tulsa, UC Davis, UCLA and Washington.

• February seemed to be a prosperous month for the Long Beach State men’s golf team as it tallied two first-place finishes.  The 49ers edged out conference foe UC Irvine for the Folino Invitational championship before overcoming an eight-stroke deficit in the final day of their own event, Del Walker Intercollegiate, to capture their second straight title.

Long Beach State wasn’t the only team to find success early on in the spring season.  The Pacific men’s team, who was bounced from the top spot on the leaderboard at the Del Walker Intercollegiate, thanks to LBSU’s eight-stroke comeback, opened the 2013 season with a team title at The Farms College Invitational.

•  Like the men’s program, the Long Beach State women picked up their first team title of the year early last month with a victory in their home tournament, The Gold Rush.  The 49ers recorded a final round score of 306 for a three-day total of 917 to hold off second-place Gonzaga by 10 shots.

• Three individuals shined at their respective events, picking up individual top honors.  Cal Poly’s Camden Price fired a two-round 142 to grab the Pat Hicks Invitational title.  The freshman outlasted two other golfers in a six-hole playoff for his first individual collegiate title.

UC Irvine’s Travis Russell posted a tournament-low, three-round total of 214 at the Folino Invitational presented by Automobile Club of Southern California.  Russell, who shot an even-par 72 in the final round, won with a birdie on the second playoff hole over Sacramento State’s Ryan Williams and Loyola Marymount’s Tyler Torano.

Cal State Northridge senior Margo Dionisio won the first tournament of her career after capturing the Lady Cougar Invitational with a two-round score of 148 (76-72).  Dionisio tied for first with Cal State San Marcos’ Alyssa Waite, but won Individual Medalist honors via a card-off. The individual tournament win was the first by a CSUN player since Kylie Kimura won the Firestone Grill Invitational in Oct., 2010.

• The Big West Golf Championships are once again split for the 2013 season. The women’s golf championship continues its stint at the San Luis Obispo Country Club on April 21-23.  On the men’s side, the conference championship takes place at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto, Calif., April 28-30.  Both tournaments are three-day, 54-hole tournaments with 18 holes played each day.  UC Davis is the defending champion for both the men’s and women’s event.
