Big West Duo Earned National All-Academic Honors


Senior Sarah Sumpter (UC Davis) and freshman Laura Hollander (Cal Poly) represented the Big West Conference on the 2012 Division I Women’s Cross Country All-Academic squad as announced by the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Monday. This is the second scholar-athlete award for Sumpter, while Hollander collects her first.

The duo were among 115 female Division I student-athletes from 69 institutions bestowed with All-Academic status. To qualify for the award, a recipient must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or better, and finished among the top 15 at an NCAA regional or earned USTFCCAA All-America honors.

Sumpter, a psychology major, has also twice captured Big West Confererence Fall All-Academic accolades. On the cross country course, she has finished second at the last two Big West championship meets after winning the individual title in 2009. Sumpter also picked up All-Region acclaim for her 13th-place finish at the NCAA West Regional last fall.

Hollander, a kinesiology major, was named an All-American after finishing ninth at the national championship meet in November, completing the 6K course in Louisville, Ky., in 19 minutes, 45 seconds. The Big West Conference Women's Athlete of the Year, Hollander paced the Mustangs at every meet she competed in this past season and set three course records.
