Long Beach State Breaks From Big West Play For East Coast Trip

2/20/2013

Tennis Weekly Release No. 7

Long Beach State, with four Big West wins among its first seven matches, takes a brief respite from conference action to tackle a three-match east coast swing.  The 49ers are making stops at UNC Greensboro, Wake Forest and North Carolna State this week.

BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

Long Beach State Women Embark On East Coast Road Trip
Fresh off a pair of 4-3 victories against San Diego State and then-No. 65 Hawai’i, Big West battle-tested Long Beach State journeys back east for three non-conference matchups.  Having already played four Big West matches – all wins – the 49ers break away from conference familiarity to face UNC Greensboro, Wake Forest and North Carolina State this weekend.  LBSU has won four straight and six of its first seven contests to start the season, including two victories against ranked opponents.alt

The win against UH last Saturday was the 15th straight in Big West play for No. 46 LBSU, which last lost a conference match on Mar. 5, 2011.  LBSU encounters its third ranked foe in the No. 73-ranked Wolfpack to close out the trip Sunday.  The 49ers close out a four-match roadtrip next week with a highly anticipated showdown against No. 50 UC Irvine in a battle between the two favorites to win the Big West championship.

UC Irvine Women Extend Win Streak
UC Irvine rides a season-best and Big West-best five-match winning streak into action against New Mexico State Saturday.  The Anteaters play nine straight games at home and do not leave their friendly campus confines for the entire month of March.  UCI has climbed to No. 50 in the ITA poll with wins against No. 55 Tulane, No. 33 Pepperdine and No. 46 LSU aiding the ascent in the rankings.  Reigning Big West Athlete of the Week Kristina Smith ranks ninth in school history in career dual match singles wins (61).  Freshman Sarah Stadfelt has won six consecutive singles matches, while fellow frosh Sarah Gong has defeated five of her last six foes.

Titans Continue Hot Play
Cal State Fullerton won its third straight match, a 4-3 thriller over No. 65 Hawai’i, to move to 2-1 in Big West play.  It is the first time since the Big West went to a round-robin schedule in 2006 that the Titans have won two conference matches.  In the midst of a seven-match homestand, the Titans host UC San Diego and New Mexico State this week.

Pacific Men Off To 2-0 Conference Start

The Pacific men have positioned themselves for a run at the Big West regular season title after moving to 2-0 in league play following a 4-3 win at Hawai’i last week.  Both league wins have come on the road.  Five of Pacific’s eight matches have gone the distance.  Pacific is 2-2 on a current six-game roadtrip with a match at Fresno State looming on Saturday.

A Decade At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 10th consecutive year.  One of the premier facilities in the United States that also hosts the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all seven men’s and 10 women’s teams from April 25-28.  The Long Beach State women won the tournament championship for the eighth time in the last nine years, while the Cal Poly men captured the title for the first time in program history.
