Long Beach State Puts Home Court Win Streak On Line Against Cal State Fullerton

Men's Basketball Weekly Release No. 15

A five-game winning streak by Hawai’i has created some intrigue in the Big West men's basketball race, but loosening Long Beach State's grip on first place will require a rare phenomenon – a loss at home.  The 49ers have won 23 straight Big West games inside the Walter Pyramid as they prepare to host Cal State Fullerton on ESPNU Wednesday.

• Hawai’i tightened the Big West race with two home victories last week, including a commanding 21-point win against first-place Long Beach State.  The Warriors have pulled to within 1.5 games of the 49ers as they resume conference play on the road against UC Davis and Pacific.  Long Beach State overcame the rough outing against UH, overcoming a red hot Cal State Northridge team in an 83-80 thriller.  It marked LBSU’s fifth win by four or less points against Big West opposition.alt

• The 49ers return home Wednesday to face Cal State Fullerton for a nationally televised contest on ESPNU.  The last four games between the two rivals at the Walter Pyramid have averaged 4,940 fans, including 5,649 for last year’s showdown.

• LBSU’s home court win streak against Big West opponents stands at 23 straight going into the CSF game.  The 49ers have not lost a Big West game at the Walter Pyramid since Feb. 17, 2010.

• Under head coach Dan Monson, Long Beach State has won 40 of its last 45 regular season games against Big West competition, dating back to the final regular season game in 2009-10.

• Home court is a huge advantage for a number of teams in the Big West during conference play.  Four clubs – LBSU (6-0), Cal Poly (6-0), UC Irvine (5-0) and Pacific (5-0) – are undefeated at home while Hawai’i is a solid 6-1 inside the Stan Sheriff Center.  The home team is 37-22 (.627) in Big West play so far.

• Hawai’i carries a season-best five-game win streak into this week’s road trip.  The Warriors find themselves in title contention thanks to winning three straight road games (UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton), which had not happened since the 2003-04 season.  The Warrior frontline duo of Christian Standhardinger and Vander Joaquim have each collected nine double-doubles on the season.

• Cal State Fullerton senior D.J. Seeley is poised to become the first Big West player this season to pounce on the 1,000-point career mark.  The senior guard is just 19 points shy of the mark as he bids to become the 21st player in school history to accomplish the feat.  With 981 points in 54 career games, he would become the fifth fastest Titan to achieve the milestone if he hits the mark against LBSU.

• Cal Poly has won 11 straight Big West home games going into Saturday’s rivalry game with UC Santa Barbara.

• For the eighth year, institutions will air all home and conference matches on BigWest.TV.  For the 2012-13 season, all BigWest.TV events will air free of charge.  Head to thisweek for weekly event schedules.
