Tennis Weekly Release No. 5
Big West women's tennis teams play six matches against foes residing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll this week, including UC Irvine's showdowns with No. 33 Pepperdine and No. 46 LSU. BIG WEST AT A GLANCE
Big West Women Brace For Showdowns With Ranked Foes
A slew of matches against ranked opponents await the Big West women this week as the tennis season becomes a month old.
UC Irvine, ranked No. 65 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, travels to No. 33 Pepperdine and hosts No. 46 LSU. The Anteaters are 3-3 against a rather rough schedule that includes two encounters with No. 4 USC and a match with No. UCLA that was much tighter than last week’s 5-2 score indicated. Kristina Smith lost her match at the No. 1 spot 6-4, 6-4 and two of her teammates nearly took sets at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots before eventually succumbing. Long Beach State looks to rebound from a tough 4-3 loss to Loyola Marymount, taking its own shot at No. 46 LSU at the Rhodes Tennis Center. That will be the only other home match against a ranked team – the remainder all take place on the road as Pacific journeys to No. 57 UNLV, Cal Poly visits No. 40 Saint Mary’s and UC Davis invades No. 69 Oregon.
Cal State Fullerton Earns Watershed Win Against Cal State Northridge
The Cal State Fullerton women have played some competitive conference matches over the years, coming close to knocking off their Big West opposition, but for the most part have struggled. Since the Big West went to a round robin schedule in 2006, the Titans have won four Big West matches, all against UC Riverside. That changed on Saturday when the Titans edged Cal State Northridge, 4-3, winning a hotly contested doubles point and at the bottom three spots in singles.
UC Santa Barbara Takes First Crack At Conference Foes
UC Santa Barbara finished 2-1 in its first weekend of competition under first-year head coach Simon Thibodeau. Now his troops get the chance to see how they measure up against Big West foes UC Riverside and Long Beach State. The Gauchos travel to those spots this week and hope to end a 13-match win streak by the 49ers in Big West regular season matches.
Light Week Of Action For Men’s Tennis
Only six matches are on the men’s tennis ledger this week. The week is highlighted by UC Irvine’s midwest trip to face Wisconsin and DePaul. The Anteaters are riding some momentum after defeating No. 70 Fresno State to pick up their first win of the season. Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara also host Loyola Marymount this week.
A Decade At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 10th consecutive year. One of the premier facilities in the United States that also hosts the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all seven men’s and 10 women’s teams from April 25-28. The Long Beach State women won the tournament championship for the eighth time in the last nine years, while the Cal Poly men captured the title for the first time in program history.
