With only two teams yet to compete this season, the 14-6 record in the second week of play across six Big West teams and all nationally ranked shows competition reigns high in the waters this season.  UC Davis competed in its first contest this past week in a 12-7 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.  UCSB hosted the Winter Invite, competing in seven matches (5-2), while conference foes Cal State Northridge (3-1), Pacific (3-1) and UC Irvine (2-2) also played in the Gauchos' pool last week.

TIGERS TO HOST PACIFIC INVITATIONAL
Pacific will host the Pacific Invitational this week after an impressive showing last week at the UCSB Winter Invite, where the Tigers went 3-1, including an upset against No. 8 Loyola Marymount (8-6).  In her good efforts to protect the net, Michele Relton garnered this season’s first Big West Player of the Week award with a season-high 14 saves against Azusa Pacific.

The 56 saves to start of the season for the junior brings her career total to 679 blocks, putting her just two short of becoming Pacific’s all-time leader.

HAWAI’I HITS THE MAINLAND
Ranked No. 11 and yet to compete, Hawai’i kicks off its inaugural season in the Big West on the mainland against Sonoma State (1/31) and Santa Clara (2/1) before competing in the Stanford Invitational the remainder of the week.  The Rainbow Wahine bring back 13 letter winners while welcoming nine newcomers to the water this season.  Senior Monika Eggens returns after training with the Canadian National Team. The two-time all-MPSF first team selection led her league last year with 2.56 goals per match.

UC IRVINE TO HOST BIG WEST TOURNAMENT
The Anteaters will host this season’s postseason Big West tournament at the Anteater Aquatics Complex, April 26-28th.  The ‘Eaters have dominated all four seasons as tournament champs, this being the first time the ‘Eaters will host the conference tournament.  Last season Irvine made a postseason run to finish fourth at the NCAA Tournament.
