Triple Threat Starts Season Strong In Opening Weekend

Three teams competed in the opening weekend of the 2013 women’s water polo season. New addition San Diego State led the way with four matches at the Michigan Kick-Off.
The seventh ranked Aztecs defeated ranked opponents Indiana (11-5) and Michigan (11-10) on the final day of competition, while splitting the first day losing season opener against No. 3 UCLA (12-8) but bouncing back in a win against No. 9 San Jose State (10-9). Freshman starter Rachel Mitchell defended the goal tied career-high 13 saves verses Indiana collecting a total 62 saves over the four-games played.
UC Santa Barbara kicked off the season at Loyola Marymount in a two-game meet verses Cal State Bakersfield (13-10) and Cal State San Bernardino (20-3). The Gauchos came out strong scoring the first goal just 30 seconds into the game against Bakersfield, and finishing with 10 second half goals in the 20-3 blowout against San Bernardino.
Pacific had a single game to start the season with new head coach James Graham making his debut. The Tigers faced No. 4 California, suffering a 14-4 loss to open the season.
GAUCHOS HOST WINTER INVITE
After a 2-0 start on the season, the Gauchos will host the Winter Invite this weekend for a three-day event, Jan. 25-27, welcoming multiple teams including three Big West foes, Pacific, Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine.
UC IRVINE TO HOST BIG WEST TOURNAMENT
The Anteaters will host this season’s post-season tournament at the Anteater Aquatics Complex, April 26-28th. The ‘Eaters have dominated all four seasons as tournament champs, this being the first time the ‘Eaters will host the conference tournament. Last season Irvine made a post-season run finishing fourth at the NCAA Tournament.
