BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

Challenges Loom Ahead For Big West Women at ITA Kick-Off Weekend
UC Irvine and Hawai’i are participating in the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Kick-Off Weekend to highlight women’s tennis non-conference action.  The Kick-Off Weekend takes place at 15 different sites across the country with four teams at each site.

The Anteaters, ranked No. 67 in the Jan. 22 ITA poll, travel the short distance to USC to compete alongside No. 55 Tulane, Akron and the host and No. 4-ranked Trojans.  UCI draws the Green Wave in Saturday’s first match at 9:00 a.m.  Meanwhile, the Rainbow Wahine are sojourning clear across the country to the Sunshine State.  Hawai’i faces host No. 9-ranked Miami (FL) on Saturday at 7:00 a.m. (PST) and plays either No. 35 Arizona State or No. 44 Oklahoma on the second day.alt

The winner at each site advances to the ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championship, which will be hosted next month by the University of Virginia.

Long Beach State Prepares to Defend Big West Title
Having won six regular season titles in the seven years that the Big West has played a round robin schedule, Long Beach State is a women’s tennis juggernaut.  The 49ers are an astounding 52-2 (.963) in regular season play since 2006.  They have finished with an unblemished record in Big West play five times – 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012.  LBSU brings an 11-match regular season win streak versus Big West opponents into this week’s matches, playing at Cal State Fullerton Friday and hosting UC Riverside Saturday.

Big West Men Take on Heavy Hitters
In conjunction with the women, the ITA Men’s Kick-Off Weekend takes center stage with 15 host sites.  The Big West’s Cal Poly is an invitee to the UCLA-hosted site, and the Mustangs begin the tournament on Friday against the No. 3-ranked Bruins.  Cal Poly, tied with No. 57 Brigham Young in this week’s rankings, meets either the Cougars or No. 50 South Florida in Saturday’s second match.  No. 68 UC Santa Barbara also gets a crack at UCLA in a Wednesday matinee.  Next week Cal Poly and UC Irvine play back-to-back against No. 2 USC on Tuesday.  The USC match ends a stretch of four straight ranked foes for the Mustangs.

A Decade At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 10th consecutive year.  One of the premier facilities in the United States that also hosts the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all seven men’s and 10 women’s teams from April 25-28.  The Long Beach State women won the tournament championship for the eighth time in the last nine years, while the Cal Poly men captured the title for the first time in program history.
