Sophomore Alex Sanchez (Anaheim, Calif./Troy HS) led Long Beach State in scoring in a pair of wins to capture Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors.
The 5-10 guard registered a game-high 15 points to go along with eight rebounds and four assists as the 49ers earned a 62-52 victory over Cal Poly. She positioned LBSU for victory with six straight points during a 10-2 run late in the game. Sanchez also knocked down 7-of-8 free throw attempts and had two steals against the Mustangs.
Sanchez returned two days later with a team-best 12 points in LBSU's 52-45 triumph versus UC Santa Barbara. She hit a pair of three-pointers in the game, including one that broke a 41-41 tie with 3:32 remaining. Sanchez also made a crucial free throw with 53.9 seconds left.
For the week, Sanchez led the 49ers in points (27), points per game (13.5), steals (4), free throws made (9) and field goals made (8). She averaged 13.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals while hitting on 47.1 (8 of 17) percent from the floor and 81.8 (9 of 11) percent at the charity stripe.
