Okpala Earns Final Women's Volleyball Weekly Award of 2012

Chisom Okpala (Yorba Linda, Calif./Valencia HS) helped Long Beach State end its season on a seven-match winning streak with two solid road performances, earning the sophomore Big West Women's Volleyball Player of the Week recognition.alt

The 6-2 middle blocker averaged 3.88 kills and 1.50 blocks per set as the 49ers dispatched UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly to finish the campaign 18-11 and 13-5 in the Big West, good for second place.

Okpala was instrumental in the five-set comeback against the Gauchos on Friday.  She finished the match with 18 kills and six blocks while hitting .316 (18-6-38) as LBSU won the final two sets 26-24 and 15-13.  The 49ers were down 2-0 in the match before mounting the comeback.

In Saturday's sweep of the Mustangs, Okpala contributed another six blocks to go along with a team-high 13 kills.  She swung at a .346 (13-4-26) clip.

Okpala hit .328 (31-10-64) for the week, which matches her season percentage, the third-best in the Big West.  Okpala also ranks fifth in the conference in blocks (1.17 bpg).
