Cal State Northridge Looks To Extend Best Ever Division I Start

Men's Basketball Weekly Release No. 3

Cal State Northridge has raced off to a 6-0 start, the best in its Division I history, and hopes to continue the success with a road game against BYU Saturday.

• The Big West is 19-18 against non-conference opponents through two weeks of the season.  Teams are 12-6 on the home, 1-12 in true road games and 6-0 on neutral courts.  Cal State Northridge picked up the conference’s first road win with a 74-71 triumph against San Diego in the NUCDF Challenge last week.

• Cal State Northridge, picked to finish eighth in the preseason media poll, is off to a 6-0 start.  The Matadors defeated Pepperdine and Eastern Washington at home, then won four times in four days at the NUCDF Challenge.  CSUN topped San Diego, Siena, Tulsa and Northern Kentucky in succession.  It is the program’s best Division I start (1990-91) and the best overall start in over 30 years.  The 1981-82 club began the season 9-0.  CSUN’s next outing is Saturday at Brigham Young.

• Junior Josh Greene has hit 29 straight free throws for Cal State Northridge.  He is three short of the all-time record of 32, set by Markus Carr during the 2000-01 season.

• UC Irvine is off to a 3-1 start.  The Anteaters put a scare into No. 13 UCLA last week, falling 80-79 in overtime.  UCI had a chance to take the lead with 2.6 seconds left in regulation, but two missed free throws kept the score tied at 67-67.  The Anteaters had a 79-78 lead with 27.9 ticks left in the extra session, but UCLA scored the final basket with just under 17 seconds remaining.  UCI is in the middle of three games at the Progressive Legends Subregional in Huntsville, Tex.  The Anteaters defeated Liberty on day one and take on Southern Miss and host Sam Houston State to close out the tournament.

• Hawai’i is also 3-1.  The Rainbow Warriors had a great opportunity to go 4-0, leading Big 10 foe Illinois by as many as 16 points in the second half, but let the lead slip away in a 78-77 overtime loss on Friday.  Big West preseason all-conference pick Vander Joaquim lived up to his billing with 22 points and 11 rebounds.  UH enjoyed a dominating 51-31 advantage on the boards against the Illini.

• Sophomore transfer Corey Hawkins is making quite an impact for UC Davis.  The guard scored 30 points, the first Aggie to do so since Feb. 26, 2011, in a tough 85-82 loss to Northern Arizona.

• Cal State Fullerton matched the sixth-best single-game point total in school history with a 112-69 victory against Southern Utah at the World Vision Classic.

• For the eighth year, institutions will air all home and conference matches on BigWest.TV.  For the 2012-13 season, all BigWest.TV events will air free of charge.  Head to thisweek for weekly event schedules.
