Cal Poly's Hollander Finishes Second At NCAA West Regional

Big West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year Laura Hollander ran a time of 19:22 in the women’s 6K to place second at the NCAA West Regional located at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle, Wash. The true freshman finished six seconds behind individual champion Jordan Hasay.
UC Davis' Sarah Sumpter was the second Big West athlete to cross the finish line, placing 13th with a time of 20:03. The senior was followed by teammate Alycia Cridebring, who posted a time of 20:08 to grab 16th place.
The Aggies were the highest Big West team to finish, placing sixth with a team score of 177. Led by Hollander, Cal Poly landed in the 11th slot after notching a 327 point total. UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside and Long Beach State secured the 16th-18th spots, while UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton finished 22nd and 28th, respectively.
On the men’s side, Cal Poly’s David Cardona paced the Big West athletes, running a time of 30:10 in the 10K to nab 17th place. UC Davis sophomore Trevor Halsted followed close behind in 20th place after registering a 30:12 mark.
Cardona guided the Mustangs to an eighth place team finish to pace all Big West schools. Led by Big West Men’s Freshman of the Year Bryan Guijarro, the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara placed 11th, while UC Davis finished 15th and UC Irvine grabbed 17th place. UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton finished back-to-back in 22nd and 23rd place and Cal State Fullerton closed out the Big West teams with a 25th team finish.
The top two men’s and women’s teams from the NCAA West Regional automatically advance to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 17 at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kent. Individual and team at-large bids are also awarded following the nine regionals held around the nation on Saturday.
