12 VB Release-Week 12

• The University of Hawai’i maintained its perfect record for another week, improving to 14-0 in Big West play. The Rainbow Wahine now hold a five-match lead over second place Cal State Northridge (9-5) with four contests remaining, which earns them their sixth Big West Conference championship.  They collected five titles during their first stint in the Big West Conference (1985-95), including their final season.

• The Rainbow Wahine need just four more league wins to post the conference’s first perfect record since UC Santa Barbara tallied an 18-0 mark in 2002.  Hawai’i was flawless in its last season in the Big West, registering an 18-0 mark back in 1995.

• Cal State Northridge is just two wins shy of posting its first 20-win season since joining the Big West Conference in 2001.  Currently owning an 18-8 overall mark, the Matadors have five more contests to pick up two wins.

• Last week, Hawai’i junior Emily Hartong was recognized as the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week.

• UC Irvine’s Kristin Winkler ranks third in Big West history with 2,115 digs (UCI Record) and needs 79 more scoops to claim the top spot.  Winkler is only the third Big West athlete to eclipse the 2,000-dig threshold.  Just last week the senior libero recorded 36 digs against Pacific to set a new UCI single-match record.

• UC Santa Barbara freshman Taylor Formico owns 628 digs, a UCSB freshman record, ranks among the Top 10 nationally with a 5.87 dig per set average and is threatening the Gauchos’ and Big West’s all-time single season records.  She is currently third in the Big West annals in digs and on pace to finish second in conference history in single-season dig average.

• For the seventh year, institutions will air all home and conference matches on BigWest.TV, and beginning with the 2012 season, all BigWest.TV events will air free of charge.  Head to thisweek for weekly event schedules.
