12 VB Release - Week 11

10/29/2012

• Nationally-ranked Hawai’i continues to sit atop the Big West Conference with a perfect 12-0 record.  The last time a team recorded an unblemished league mark was in 2002 when UC Santa Barbara went 18-0.

• A tough week ahead for the second-place Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara as they visit league-leading Hawai’i on Thursday and third-place Cal State Northridge Saturday evening.

• On Saturday, Oct. 27, Cal State Northridge secured its first-ever season sweep over Long Beach and earned its first victory inside The Walter Pyramid since 2004.

• Three freshmen reign supreme in the Big West statistics.  Hawaii’s Jade Vorster paces the conference with a .382 hitting percentage, UC Santa Barbara’s Taylor Formico owns a league-best 5.92 dig average and UC Riverside’s Emily Borges ranks first in assists (10.60 DPS).

• Hawaii’s Emily Hartong hit a career-high 33 kills in the Rainbow Wahine victory over Long Beach State.  The outside hitter posted the second-best performance of the year as Cal State Fullerton’s Kayla Neto notched 35 kills against UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 19.

• Keep An Eye On: UC Irvine’s Kristin Winkler ranks third in Big West history with 2,062 digs (UCI Record) and needs 132 more scoops to claim the top spot.  Winkler is only the third Big West athlete to eclipse the 2,000-dig threshold.  UC Santa Barbara freshman Taylor Formico owns 592 digs, a UCSB freshman record, ranks sixth nationally with a 5.92 dig per set average and is threatening the Gauchos’ and Big West’s all-time single season records.  She is currently seventh in the Big West annals in digs and on pace to finish second in conference history in single-season dig average.

• For the seventh year, institutions will air all home and conference matches on BigWest.TV, and beginning with the 2012 season, all BigWest.TV events will air free of charge.  Head to thisweek for weekly event schedules.
