The 2012 Big West Cross Country Championship takes place Saturday, Oct. 27 at the UC Riverside Ag/Ops Course on the campus of UC Riverside. This is the fifth consecutive year the Highlanders have hosted the event. The women kick off this year's event with the 6,000-meter run at 8:45 a.m. and are followed by the men's 8K at 9:30 a.m. Ticket prices are $5 for the general public and $2 for students from Big West Conference member institutions.
Last year the Cal Poly men ran away with the Big West title, placing seven runners in the top 14 spots for its 11th team title in the past 14 seasons, and UC Davis claimed its first-ever women's crown. Both teams are primed to defend their titles.
The Mustangs have three runners in the Big West's top times this season, including first place David Cardona, who ran a time of 24:07.00 at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational just two weeks ago. They are also ranked 10th in the west region, the highest Big West team, according to the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional poll. The Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara are ranked 13th regionally and UC Irvine owns the 15th spot.
Like Cal Poly, the Aggie women are the highest ranked squad in the west region, sitting in the sixth slot, and just last week they received votes in the USTFCCCA national poll for the first time this season. UC Davis has two of the top five Big West times in the 6K with senior Sarah Sumpter posting the second fastest time (17:07.00) and junior Alycia Cridebring sitting fourth with a 20:42.80 mark. Cal Poly, led by Laura Hollander, UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside are also getting recognition in the west region poll.
