10/2/2012

• A quartet of Big West schools - Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, UC Irvine and Pacific - are headed to America’s Finest City to take part in the UCSD Triton Invite Saturday, October 6.  The men’s 8,000 meters kicks off the meet at 9:00 a.m. and is followed by the women’s 5,000-meter race at 9:45 a.m.  The UC San Diego cross country teams defended their home course last year, capturing a pair of team titles.

• UC Riverside Highlanders Seth Totten and Damajeria DuBose ran personal bests to lead their squads at the Dellinger Invitational at Springfield Country Club in Eugene, Ore., last Saturday.  Totten crossed the finish line in 17th place with a time of 24:10, improving his mark from last year’s Oregon meet by 17 seconds.  He currently holds the fastest 8K  mark in the Big West this season.

Dubose finished ninth with a personal-best time of 17:08 in the women’s 5,000 meters.  She shaved off nearly a minute from her time at last year’s event.  Her effort places her third in the Big West in the 5K, but she owns the top in the 6K with a time of 20:33.40.

•  Multiple Big West Conference cross country competed at the prestigious Stanford Invitational last week and faced some of the top teams in the country.  Host Stanford swept both the men’s and women’s event but the Big West had some strong showings.

On the men’s side, UC Davis’ Trevor Halsted ran a time of 24:37 to place 13th.  He was followed by UC Irvine’s Rex Nelson, who grabbed 15th after posting a mark of 24:43.  The Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara, paced by Juan Paredes, posted the highest Big West team finish with a team score of 176 to secured the fifth spot.  UC Irvine finished sixth, UC Davis earend the eighth spot, Cal Poly placed 18th and Cal State Fullerton finished 20th.

For the women, UC Santa Barbara’s Daniella Morano cracked the top 10 with a time of 21:06 in the 6K, good enough for ninth.  Teamamte Cassie Brooker followed in 15th place (21:26) to help guide the Gauchos to a third place team finish.  The Aggies of UC Davis garneded the 10th spot, with Cal Poly placing 15th and Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine tying for 21st .

• For the fifth consecutive year, the Big West Cross Country Championship takes place at the UC Riverside Ag/Ops Course.  This year’s event is slated for Saturday, Oct. 27.  Tickets prices are $5 for the general public and $2 for students from Big West Conference member institutions.
