This Week in the Big West - August 27-September 2, 2012

8/29/2012

Top-25 Performances
Ranked No. 15 last week, Long Beach State played it’s first ranked match against No. 24 Baylor at home.  With a goal from midfield in the 63rd minute, defender Alex Balcer sent it into overtime against the Bears.  Just one minute played in overtime, junior transfer Eileen Maes headed the ball past the Baylor goalkeeper to record her first goal as a 49er in the 91st minute.  Long Beach hits the road to face BYU (8/30) and Michigan (9/2) in this seasons first road trip.

UC Irvine captured their first win of the season last week against No. 21 Auburn, in a 1-0 victory.  With a rough start to the season the Anteaters are now 1-1 against ranked competition, after losing to No. 14 Texas A&M (2-1) opening weekend.  The solo goal for UCI against Auburn came from Mady Solow, recording her first collegiate career goal.  Ranked competition continues as Irvine travels to take on Pac-12 opponents Oregon (8/31) and No. 21 Oregon State (9/2).

Mauricio Looking for Milestone
Long Beach State head coach Mauricio Ingrassia is looking to break his 100-win plateau this week with a career record of 99-54-17, the all-time winningest coach in program history.  Last season he led the 49ers to their appearance in the Elite Eight, after capturing their second consecutive conference title.  This week the 49ers are ranked No. 11 on the NSCAA polls, the highest ranking for the 49er program.

UH Hot Streak
Hawai’i captured the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi tournament title last week with an overtime victory against Utah Valley, 2-1.  Before the final match, the Whaine’s sophomore Tiana Fujimoto scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in a close match against Sacred Heart (2-1).  Fujimoto continued her streak scoring the first goal against Utah Valley, her third straight match scoring for UH.  The game-winning goal came in the 103rd minute with a penalty kick by Chelsea Miyake lifting the Rainbow Whaine over the Wolverines, 2-1.
