Chian Set To Compete As Sole Representative At NCAA Championships
Long Beach State’s Philip Chian is the sole representative for the Big West at the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship after tying for fourth place at the NCAA Athens Regional in Athens, Ga.
Chian was the top performer for the at-large berth 49ers who got a chance at postseason play after finishing second at the Big West Championship by one stroke. The junior scored a 54-hole score of 3-under-par 210 at regionals for the lone individual berth to the NCAA Championship.
The Covina, Calif. native is the first 49er to advance to the final round in the programs history as an individual since the regional format was set in place. He will travel to Pacific Palisades, Calif. for the NCAA Championship at Riviera Country Club.
Chian is one of six players competing as individuals, participating in the three-day, 54-hole stroke play tournament beginning Tuesday, May 29. He is set to tee off on the first day of competition at 9 a.m. from the 10th tee, followed by his Wednesday, May 30 start for second round play at 2:20 p.m. from the first tee.
A total of 30 teams will be taking part in this year's NCAA Championship that features the first three days of stroke play competition and the top eight teams advancing onto the three-day match play to determine the national champion. Live play of all three rounds will be available on Golfstat.com.
