The first day of the team and individual events at the Big West Track and Field Championships saw the UC Santa Barbara men and women build upon their outstanding performances from last week's multi-event competitions. Held at Anteater Stadium on the campus of UC Irvine, the final championship of the 2011-12 season saw the Gaucho squads place thirteen athletes on the medal stands Friday.

Keeping the competitive edge alive, UC Santa Barbara men continued to dominate the conference opponents, improving their score to 105 after the first day of competition.  Recording a team score of 20 at the decathlon last week, UC Santa Barbara men continued their climb to the top to stretch their lead on their closest competitor by over 50 points.

In a top-three sweep, Gauchos junior Mitchell Haag took home a top mark in the men’s long jump with a 2.17m jump followed by teammates Michael Larocca (2.11m) and Max Villaba (2.06).

The Gauchos distanced themselves from the rest with UC Riverside (44) claiming runner-up after the first day of track and field events and Cal State Northridge finishing close behind with a team total 38.  The 2011 men’s defending champions, Long Beach State are seeded fourth with 36 total points as Cal Poly (36) only trails by six.  UC Irvine (16) and UC Davis (4) complete the men’s total scores after day one with the final day of competition tomorrow.Barbara Nwaba took home the top honors in the heptathlon last week and continued to lead the women’s race with a second-place finish in the javelin and clocking third in her heat in the women’s 100-meter hurdles.

It was UC Davis that made the outstanding finish with a 1-2-3 ending in the 10K with frontrunner Sarah Sumpter taking the top finish and setting a new meet record.  Sumpter finished the race at 34:34.03, passing up meet-record holder, Danielle Domenichelli from UC Santa Barbara with a 34:50.29 clocked time in 2010.

Santa Barbara women hold the 20-point lead over closest opponent UC Davis (53) followed by Long Beach State (51).  UC Riverside sits comfortably in fourth with 32 points, with Cal State Northridge trailing by just three (30).  Closing out the bottom three is Cal Poly (21), Cal State Fullerton (8) and UC Irvine(5).

The final day of competition for the Big West Track and Field Championship will start Saturday, May 12 with the men’s javelin at 9 a.m. and conclude with the final 5K rave to close out the 2012 Big West Track and Field Champinoships.
