The Big West Track and Field Championship is underway as the eight conference teams rallied up for the first round of competition in Anteater Stadium at UC Irvine for multi-event championships.
UC Santa Barbara showed dominance leading both the men’s and women’s section of the decathlon and heptathlon events. Three-time Big West Athlete of the Week this season, Barbara Nwaba led in all women’s events with a total score 3648 for the day competing in the 100-hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200 meter.
Close behind in the heptathlon are Long Beach State contenders, Phylicia Johnson who scored 3,217 points for second place, and Sara Macey earns third respectively with 3,210.
The men’s multi’s were led by Gauchos' Derek Masterson scoring a combined 3872 in the first day of competition, leading in three of the five contending events. Junior Donovan Toban, from Cal State Northridge took the top marks in two events competing in the decathlon for runner up with a total score of 3728.
The five marks recorded for men’s were the 100-meter, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter, leaving the 110-hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter to conclude the multi competition tomorrow.
Competition will continue Saturday, May 5 at Anteater Stadium for the conclusion of the men’s and women’s multi-event championships. Decathlon events will start at 11 am and heptathlon starting at 1 pm, live results can be found on flashwest.com.
