In a battle to the end, UC Davis collected its second consecutive Big West Men’s Golf Championship finishing Tuesday with a total 6-under par at the La Quinta Resort, Mountain Course in La Quinta, Calif.
This is the third title for the Aggies in the last four years finishing with a total of 858 (290-280-288) after three days of course play. Matt Seramin, who finished tied for fourth overall with UC Santa Barbara’s Paul Otte, led Davis.
Leading all scorers in an impressive three-day showing, Alex Edfort of Pacific shot an overall 13-under par for a five-stroke lead over the closest competitor. Edfort finished with a total of 203, tied for third with Utah State alum and former PGA Tour Pro Jay Don Blake (1980) in the all-time Big West Championship records.
Cal State Fullerton’s Mark Anguiano shot a one under for the day to finish 8-under, earning second place individually. Kei Kita of UC Santa Barbara made a two spot jump from competition on day two for third overall, with a 212 (72-69-71) total for the tournament.
Long Beach State made an impressive final-day push to finish just one stroke behind the tournament winner, shooting an overall 65-under par.
Leading the final day of action with a 9-under par, Cal State Fullerton took sole possession of third with a total of 861 (290-292-279). Pacific finished 4-over par on the day but managed to nab fourth while UC Santa Barbara (867) garnered fifth. Rounding out the team totals, UC Irvine finished sixth (868), followed by Cal Poly (894), Cal State Northridge (895) and UC Riverside (909).UC Davis will make its third appearance in the NCAA Division I Regionals, which will be held at three respective courses.
The Aggies will learn of their placement in the tournament during the NCAA Division I selection show on Monday, May 7 at 6.
