WOMEN'S QUARTERFINALS
(5) UC SANTA BARBARA 4, (4) CAL POLY 3

No. 5 seed UC Santa Barbara outlasted No. 4 seed Cal Poly, 4-3, in a marathon five hour and 17 minute battle that finished off Big West Women's Tennis Championship quarterfinal play at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Friday.

The match came down to No. 4 singles between UC Santa Barbara's Paola Cos and Cal Poly's Kathryn Webb.  Cos took the first set 6-3 but Webb rebounded to win the second 7-5.  In the third and deciding set, Webb began sustaining cramps that eventually forced her to retire with Cos leading 5-3.

UCSB improved to 11-13 with the win and advanced to Saturday's semifinals to face top-seeded Long Beach State.  Cal Poly finished the season 10-11.

It was a war from the start as both teams played drawn out doubles matches at every position.  After splitting at No. 1 and No. 2, Gabby Gatewood and Jennifer Cornea eked out an 8-5 victory over April Scatliffe and Casey Reed to give the Mustangs the point.

UCSB tied the match quickly as Natalia Lozano downed Jocelyn Davis 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 2 position to kick off singles play.  Cal Poly retook the lead at 2-1 when Ireen Kuipers dealt Erica Cano a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at No. 6.  The Mustangs then came within a point of victory when Gatewood knocked off Jordan Dockendorf in straight sets at No. 5.  That match included an incredible back and forth display in the first set tiebreaker as Gatewood won 19-17.  Final score in that contest was 7-6 (17), 6-3.

The Gauchos crept back as Sofia Novak battled Alexa Lee to a three-set triumph of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 1.  They then tied the score at 3-3 when April Scatliffe fought back from a first set loss to knock off Cornea, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

That enabled Cos to win the match, which goes down as the longest in Big West Championship history and exceeded last year's near five-hour marathon between UCSB and Pacific.
