Northern California Schools Sweep Tennis Awards
Pacific's Ivan Castro and Dahra Zamudio of UC Davis parlayed perfect singles and doubles records against conference competition into well-deserved Big West Men's and Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, respectively.
Castro Posts 5-0 Record In Singles And Doubles
Ivan Castro (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Atheneu) excelled for Pacific with singles and doubles wins over a pair of conference opponents, garnering the senior Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.
Castro began the week with an important win against Sacramento State’s Javie Millan, a 7-6, 6-0 triumph that helped the Tigers defeat the Hornets 4-2.
Castro then posted a combined 4-0 record as the Tigers lost a heartbreaking 4-3 thriller to UC Irvine and defeated UC Riverside 5-2. He toppled the Anteaters’ Sam Gould in a hard fought 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (6) battle and combined with Alex Golding to down Gould and Jacob Jung at No. 1 doubles. Castro moved up to No. 1 singles to face UCR’s Felix Macherez and responded with a solid 6-3, 6-0 victory.

Zamudio Keys Victory Over No. 66 UC Irvine
Dahra Zamudio (Orange, Calif./Villa Park HS) won all four of her singles and doubles matches, helping UC Davis to a key upset win over No. 66 UC Irvine, and claimed Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.
Zamudio cruised to a straight set 6-1, 6-3 victory against UCI’s Courtney Byron at No. 2 singles to help propel the Aggies to a 5-2 victory. The win improved UCD to 4-2 in conference play and put the team in position to capture the No. 2 seed for the Big West Championship with wins against Pacific and Cal State Fullerton this week.
The Aggies continued the week with a dominating 6-1 win over San Jose State. Zamudio battled back from an early deficit to win her match against Chau Truong in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (3).
