Long Beach State Locks Down No. 1 Seed, Aims For Undefeated Conference Season
The Long Beach State women’s team wrapped up the No. 1 seed for the Big West Tournament later this month and clinched at least a share of the regular season championship with road wins against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara last week. The 49ers outlasted the Gauchos, 4-3, in a near five-hour thriller as UCSB just missed on upsetting LBSU for the second consecutive season.
The two wins bettered Long Beach State’s record to 13-5 overall and 7-0 in Big West action. The 49ers are win one away from finishing undefeated in conference play for the fifth time in the last seven seasons. LBSU also posted unblemished marks in 2010 (8-0), 2009 (8-0), 2008 (8-0) and 2006 (7-0). The lone remaining obstacle in LBSU’s path is Cal State Fullerton, who faces the 49ers on Thursday. Long Beach State has captured at least a share of the Big West regular season championship in six of the last seven seasons, coming up short only in 2007 to UC Irvine.
UC Irvine Attempts To Cloud Up Big West Men’s Race
UC Irvine needs a pair of road victories this week to successfully make the Big West men’s tennis race a bit hazy. The Anteaters (4-15, 1-1) travel up north to clash with Pacific and UC Davis. Two victories would move UCI into a second place tie with UC Santa Barbara (11-7, 3-1). Cal Poly is the current Big West leader at 3-0 and ultimately controls its own destiny with league matches remaining at UC Irvine (Apr. 21) and at UC Riverside (Apr. 22). After losing 14 of 15 matches during one stretch, the Anteaters won back-to-back contests for the first time this season as they knocked off Loyola Marymount and UC Riverside last week. UCI has played an extremely difficult schedule as 13 of its 15 losses have come to ranked teams.
UC Irvine Women Close Out Regular Season With Three Straight Road Matches
The UC Irvine women’s tennis team is peaking at the right time going into its final three matches of the regular season. The Anteaters travel to Sacramento State for a non-conference contest on Thursday before battling UC Davis and Pacific over the weekend, respectively. UCI has won five straight and 10 of its last 11 contests. In conference play, the Anteaters are 5-1 and occupy sole possession of second place. Following the Pacific match on Sunday, the Anteaters have nearly two weeks off to prepare for the Big West Championships as their first action takes place on Friday, Apr. 27 in the quarterfinals.
Indian Wells To Host Big West Tennis Championships
For the ninth straight year, Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship. One of the most prestigious facilities in the United States, Indian Wells will host the six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 27-29. Long Beach State’s women and UC Irvine’s men took the 2011 crowns. The 49ers won their seventh title in the last eight years, while the Anteaters won their second consecutive championship.
