Cal Poly hosts Pacific in a key men's match and UC Irvine welcomes Cal State Northridge in an important women's match as the conference tennis schedule heats up going down the home stretch.

Cal Poly Men Look To Maintain Big West Lead

The Cal Poly men’s tennis team hosts Pacific Saturday in a battle of unbeaten teams in Big West play.  The Mustangs (10-5, 2-0) own victories against UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis while the Tigers also beat the Aggies back in January.  A win would give the Mustangs a firm grip on attaining their second regular season championship in the last three seasons.  Cal Poly has won 10 of its last 12 games with the only setbacks coming to No. 45 Boise State and No. 17 Washington.  The Mustangs gave the Huskies all they could handle last Friday in a 4-3 neutral court loss in Malibu, Calif.

In addition to taking on the Mustangs, Pacific also faces UC Santa Barbara to complete the Central Court circuit this week.  The Gauchos have been idle for two weeks in order to take final exams but in their last outing pulled off an upset against No. 22 Texas Tech.  UCSB has won five of its last seven matches overall.  Pacific recently beat No. 52 Purdue, its second win against a ranked opponent this season.  The Tigers have played a tough schedule with eight of their 15 contests against ranked opponents.

UC Irvine Tries To Keep Pace In Women’s Standings

Sizzling UC Irvine has won eight of its last nine contests and are a season-high six games above .500 at 11-5.  The Anteaters are also 3-1 in Big West play, tied for second place with UC Santa Barbara.  They trail league-leading Long Beach State, who is 5-0 in conference action.  The Anteaters face an important task on Sunday at home against a formidable Cal State Northridge squad.  The Matadors are riding a three-game winning streak.  UC Irvine recently moved back into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) team rankings at No. 67.

Aggies Making Dual Trip To The Islands
Both the UC Davis men’s and women’s squads will be making a joint trip to Hawai’i to square off against identical opponents this week.  The Aggies meet future Big West member Hawai’i on Friday and then battle Division II foe Hawai’i-Pacific on Saturday.  Both teams are looking to shake off the rust from taking final exams.  Neither team has played since Mar. 4.

Indian Wells To Host Big West Tennis Championships

For the ninth straight year, Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship.  One of the most prestigious facilities in the United States, Indian Wells will host the six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 27-29.  Long Beach State’s women and UC Irvine’s men took the 2011 crowns.  The 49ers won their seventh title in the last eight years, while the Anteaters won their second consecutive championship.
