Non-Conference Play Dwindles Down As Big West Action Set To Begin
Big West teams play a smorgasbord of non-conference opponents this week before conference play is ready to begin the following weekend.  Cal State Northridge participates in the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament and takes on Brown and La Verne on Saturday.  Long Beach State takes part in the Pomona Tournament.  Pacific hosts its own invitational and northern California rival UC Davis is in the field along with No. 13 Maryland and Santa Clara.

Meanwhile, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara get set to take their best shot against a couple of national powerhouses.  The 49ers travel to No. 3 USC on Thursday while the Gauchos welcome No. 2 Stanford on Sunday.

UC Davis Takes Five-Match Winning Streak Into This Week’s Action
UC Davis rides a season-best five-match winning streak into matches with Santa Clara and Pacific this week.  The match with the Tigers counts in the overall standings but is designated non-conference since it’s a part of Pacific’s tournament.  However, the two teams will rematch right away the following weekend in the Big West opener at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.  The Aggies have knocked off two ranked teams – No. 20 UC San Diego and No. 10 Maryland – during the win streak and have outscored those opponents 57-17.

Ringel Solid In Net As Long Beach State Extends Win Streak To Four
Long Beach State sophomore goaltender Kelly Ringel almost single-handedly won a game for her team in last week’s contest with Bucknell.  The netminder made 20 saves in the 6-5 overtime victory, including four during the extra two periods.  She kept the 49ers close early on with six first period stops, including one on a penalty shot.  Ringel came back the next day with 10 saves in a 10-5 defeat of Harvard.

UC Davis Moves Up In Poll
The most recent Collegiate Water Polo Association rankings just came out and UC Irvine sits at No. 6 in the poll for the second straight week.  The Anteaters are dormant for two weeks to study for exams and return to the pool on Mar. 31 for their Big West opener against Cal State Northridge.

UC Davis moved up four spots to a season-best No. 11 in the poll while UC Santa Barbara vaulted three places to No. 14.  Cal State Northridge is No. 17 and Long Beach State is receiving votes.

Big West In NCAA Championship
The Big West received an automatic qualification to the NCAA Championship for the first time in league history in 2011.  Once again, the Big West Tournament champion will earn one of nine slots for the 2012 NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championship, which will be played May 11-13 at the Aztec Aquaplex in San Diego, Calif.  Host San Diego State will become an official member of the Big West in 2013.
