UC Santa Barbara, which dispatched No. 22 Texas Tech for one of the biggest wins in program history, joins Cal Poly as the top two teams in Big West men's tennis. The Mustangs recently reeled off eight straight wins.
Long Beach State Opens Up Commanding Lead In Big West Race
Long Beach State is 5-0 in the Big West women’s tennis standings and well on its way to securing a fifth regular season title. The 49ers won a huge match over fellow conference contender UC Irvine last week. LBSU has Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Fullerton remaining on the schedule. UC Santa Barbara is 3-1 in the Big West standings and Cal Poly 2-2. The Titans are still looking for their first Big West win this season.
UC Santa Barbara Men Pull Off Huge Upset
The UC Santa Barbara men’s tennis team won one of the biggest matches in program history on Thursday in a 4-3 upset over No. 22 Texas Tech. The Gauchos have played ranked opponents in nine of their 15 matches and the win over the Red Raiders was unquestionably the biggest of the season. UCSB also boasts wins over No. 36 BYU and No. 55 UC Irvine en route to its current 9-6 record.
The Gauchos take two weeks off to study for spring exams and return to the courts on Friday, March 29 against UC San Diego in a continuance of a seven-match homestand.
Cal Poly Looking To Start New Streak
An impressive eight-match winning streak for the Cal Poly men’s tennis team came to an end in a tough 5-2 loss at No. 45 Boise State last Saturday. The Mustangs return home though for three straight matches against tough competition, facing Minnesota, Nebraska and Princeton in a four-day stretch. Cal Poly is led by one of the top singles players in the country in junior Andre Dome. Dome is ranked No. 25 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Indian Wells To Host Big West Tennis Championships
For the ninth straight year, Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship. One of the most prestigious facilities in the United States, Indian Wells will host the six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 27-29. Long Beach State’s women and UC Irvine’s men took the 2011 crowns. The 49ers won their seventh title in the last eight years, while the Anteaters won their second consecutive championship.
