UC Irvine Takes Ninth Place In Own Invitational
UC Irvine was the highest Big West finisher in the loaded 16-team UCI Invitational last week. The Anteaters came in ninth place, overcoming a loss to Loyola Marymount in the tournament opener to capture wins over three Big West cohorts in No. 20 Long Beach State, No. 17 Cal State Northridge and No. 15 UC Santa Barbara.
UCSB finished in 10th place, CSUN 12th, UC Davis 14th and LBSU 15th to round out the list of Big West teams in the sixth annual event. The Big West came away with a couple of big non-conference wins during the two days of competition. The Matadors toppled then-No. 6 Hawai’i and the Gauchos slid past then-No. 8 San Jose State as both teams beat top 10 programs for the first time this season.
Two More Tournaments On Tap This Weekend
Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara appear in the Posada Royale Invitational this weekend. Cal Lutheran hosts the event, which includes several non-Division I programs. The Matadors meet Fresno Pacific and Concordia during day one action on Friday, then face Saint Francis and Cal State Monterey Bay to round out action on Saturday. The Gauchos battle Occidental and Azusa Pacific in their one day of participation on Saturday.
UC Davis hosts the Aggie Shootout on Saturday. The Aggies and Pacific both play No. 20 UC San Diego.
Three high-profile matches are on the docket this week as well. UC Irvine, the Big West’s top team at 12-3, looks for a marquee win at No. 4 California and No. 2 Stanford. Long Beach State also takes a crack at the Cardinal before facing Santa Clara in road action.
UC Santa Barbara Vaults Into Top 10 Of CWPA Poll
UC Santa Barbara achieved its first top 10 ranking since the Big West instituted women’s water polo in 2009. The Gauchos appeared at No. 10 in this week’s Collegiate Water Polo Association poll.
The recognition is a result of two impressive wins last week at the UC Irvine Invitational, in which UCSB topped No. 13 UC Davis and No. 8 San Jose State. The Gauchos were ranked as high as No. 11 by the CWPA on March 10, 2010.
UC Irvine remained in the top 10 for the sixth straight week after winning three of four matches at the UCI Invite. The Anteaters swapped spots with Loyola Marymount and are No. 8 this week.
Cal State Northridge checks in at No. 14, UC Davis follows at No. 16 and Long Beach State is No. 19 in the poll.
