Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara Attempt To Stay Unbeaten In Big West
Several conference matches take place this week as the race for the Big West women’s tennis title continues.  Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara attempt to preserve unblemished marks in conference play.

The 49ers, which just finished a five-match roadtrip with a 3-2 record, begin a seven-match stint at home this weekend.  They welcome future Big West member San Diego State and current conference foe UC Davis.  LBSU is 3-0 in Big West play and hopes to stay atop the standings with UC Santa Barbara.  The Gauchos are 2-0 in league action and travel to UC Irvine for a tough match on Saturday in what serves as the Big West opener for the Anteaters.  UCSB was victorious at home against UC Davis and Pacific in its two previous Big West contests.

Cal Poly looks to stay in contention for a regular season title with conference road matches at Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine.  UCD finishes up its weekend with a Big West tilt at Cal State Fullerton.

Men’s Tennis Showdown Featured This Week
The key men’s tennis match in the Big West this week is between rival contenders Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara from San Luis Obispo.

One of those two schools have either won outright or shared the Big West regular season title in four of the last six seasons.  The Mustangs won outright titles in 2010 and 2007.  The Gauchos were co-champions with UC Irvine in 2008 and captured an outright title in 2006.

Cal Poly has enjoyed the lion’s share of victories against its Central Coast rival over the last several years.  The Mustangs have won the last five regular season matchups, including three times by a narrow 4-3 margin.  They have beaten UCSB in six of the last eight matchups, including another 4-3 win at the 2010 Big West Tournament.  However, the Gauchos have twice ended Cal Poly’s season in the Big West Tournament with victories in 2007 and 2008.  Cal Poly has won six straight overall while UCSB sports a three-match winning streak.

Indian Wells To Host Big West Tennis Championships
For the ninth straight year, Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship.  One of the most prestigious facilities in the United States, Indian Wells will host the six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 27-29.  Long Beach State’s women and UC Irvine’s men took the 2011 crowns.  The 49ers won their seventh title in the last eight years, while the Anteaters won their second consecutive championship.
