A smattering of women's water polo games dot the schedule this week.  Pacific competes in the majority of those games as a participant in the Lancer Invite.  Meanwhile, UC Irvine remains the national top 10 for the fourth straight week.

Women’s Water Polo Schedule Tones Down This Week

After a busy schedule last week in which four Big West teams competed in the Triton Invitational, the action is limited this week with just six games on the ledger.

Pacific competes in four of those games as a participant in the Lancer Invite.  The Tigers open the event with No. 2 USC, followed by a matchup against host Cal Baptist on day one.  Pacific finishes the tournament on day two with matches against Occidental and Fresno Pacific.

The only other action pits UC Irvine at No. 10 Loyola Marymount and UC Davis at Sonoma State.  Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara will join host UC Irvine at the prestigious Anteater Invitational the following weekend.

Recapping last weekend’s action, UC Irvine reached the championship game of the Triton Invitational before falling to No. 5 Arizona State.  The Anteaters picked up solid wins against Marist, No. 17 San Diego State and No. 9 Maryland to run their winning streak to eight straight games before registering their lowest scoring output of the season in the 8-4 setback to the Sun Devils.  UC Santa Barbara posted a seventh place finish after going 2-2 at the tournament, including a win over Cal State Northridge in the placing match.  Long Beach State finished 11th among the 16 participating schools after notching a 2-2 record as well.

Pacific ran its winning streak to six consecutive games after defeating Fresno Pacific for the second straight match.  The win began a 12-game roadtrip for the Tigers.

UC Irvine Leads All Big West Schools At No. 7 In CWPA Poll
UC Irvine remained in the Collegiate Water Polo Association poll top 10, falling one spot to No. 7 following a 3-1 showing in last weekend’s Triton Invitational.  The Anteaters have recorded five wins against ranked opponents so far this season.

UC Davis stayed at No. 13 in the poll.  The Aggies were idle last week but return to the pool looking to halt a seven-match losing streak.  However, that slide includes six losses to opponents ranked in the nation’s top five.  And four of those defeats have been by two goals or less.

UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State are positioned at No. 15, No. 17 and No. 18, respectively.  Pacific is receiving votes in the poll for the fourth straight week.

Big West In NCAA Championship
The Big West received an automatic qualification to the NCAA Championship for the first time in league history in 2011.  Once again, the Big West Tournament champion will earn one of nine slots for the 2012 NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championship, which will be played May 11-13 at the Aztec Aquaplex in San Diego, Calif.  Host San Diego State will become an official member of the Big West in 2013.
