Defending Co-Champions Long Beach State and Cal Poly Begin Conference Schedule
The Big West women’s tennis schedule continues this week as 2011 regular season co-champions Long Beach State and Cal Poly make their 2012 conference debuts.

Long Beach State hosts Pacific on Saturday while Cal Poly welcomes UC Davis on Sunday.  The 49ers finished the 2011 season with a 20-6 overall record and 7-1 mark in Big West play.  They made their seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in eight years as the conference’s automatic qualifier.  LBSU has won 34 of its last 35 regular season conference matches since midway through the 2007 season.  UC Santa Barbara halted a 31-match 49er win streak in Big West play last March.  Long Beach State is off to a 2-0 start and plays Wyoming before the Pacific match polishes off a four-match homestand.

Cal Poly posted a 16-7 overall record and matched Long Beach State’s 7-1 league finish.  It was the first league championship in school history for the Mustangs, which received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.  First-year head coach Damon Coupe has led his charges to an early 3-1 record, with the only setback coming to No. 4 UCLA.

The men’s schedule is highlighted by a trip to the Pacific Northwest for UC Santa Barbara.  The Gauchos take on Oregon and Washington in hopes of building upon a solid 4-2 start.  The remainder of matches primarily takes place against foes from the West Coast Conference as Pacific hosts Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary’s  while Cal Poly and UC Davis welcomes San Francisco and Loyola Marymount, respectively.

Six Women’s Teams Ranked In ITA Poll
The most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regular season poll came out on Feb. 2 with six women’s teams finding themselves ranked among the top 75.  Long Beach State was the highest ranked club at No. 39, followed closely by No. 46 Cal Poly.  The conference is also represented by No. 56 UC Irvine, No. 64 UC Davis, No. 66 Cal State Northridge and No. 67 UC Santa Barbara.  On the men’s side, Cal Poly is the highest ranked competitor at No. 54 in the poll.  No. 55 UC Irvine and No. 62 UC Santa Barbara also are ranked.

Indian Wells To Host Big West Tennis Championships
For the ninth straight year, Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship.  One of the most prestigious facilities in the United States, Indian Wells will host the six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 27-29.  Long Beach State’s women and UC Irvine’s men took the 2011 crowns.  The 49ers won their seventh title in the last eight years, while the Anteaters won their second consecutive championship.
