Big West Tennis Season Into Full Swing
A healthy dose of tennis competition greets the 2012 schedule as both the men’s and women’s teams get their seasons underway.
Three Big West women’s and one men’s squad are involved in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, a group of four-team tournaments that take place across the country. Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara travel to the Coral Gables site to join host Miami (FL) and South Florida. The Matadors take on the host Hurricanes while the Gauchos battle the Lady Bulls, with the consolation and championship matches on the next day of competition. Meanwhile, UC Davis also treks east to Knoxville, Tenn. for more ITA Kick-Off Weekend action. The Aggies face host Tennessee in their first match and play either Tulsa or NC State in the consolation/championship.
On the men’s side, UC Irvine returns to the site of its season opener on Tuesday. The Anteaters battled No. 9 UCLA but lost 7-0. This weekend UCI squares off against No. 35 Fresno State in the opening round, with a potential rematch against the Bruins or a date with No. 59 Alabama next in the queue.
Long Beach State, the highest ranked Big West women’s team at No. 38, hosts Loyola Marymount in its season opener on Saturday. The 49ers won both the conference regular season and tournament titles in 2011. UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton travel to No. 53 San Diego State for a day-night doubleheader on Saturday. UC Irvine encounters its second top 20 opponent in three matches with a Wednesday tilt at No. 4 UCLA.
An early season conference match dots the schedule on the men’s side as UC Davis travels to nearby rival Pacific on Saturday.
Ranked Teams, Players Include Big West In First Campbell’s/ITA Poll
The first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regular season poll came out on Jan. 24 with representation from several Big West teams. In addition to Long Beach State, the conference is represented by No. 44 Cal Poly, No. 55 UC Irvine, No. 58 UC Davis and No. 62 UC Santa Barbara. Those same five programs were also ranked at the end of the 2011 season. On the men’s side, UC Irvine is the highest ranked Big West squad at No. 40. Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara are ranked No. 52 and No. 62, respectively.
