Sharpe Rings In New Year With Big West Honor

Janae Sharpe guided Cal State Northridge to a 2-0 start to Big West Conference play last week, earning Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors. Sharpe becomes the second Matador to earn the distinction this season with Jasmine Erving picking up the award on Nov. 28, 2011.

In the league opener against UC Irvine, Sharpe finished with a season-high 19 points to go along with seven steals, two rebounds and two assists. Her efforts led Cal State Northridge to a 55-49 victory at The Matadome.

Two days later, the freshman guard posted 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals as the Matadors snapped a nine-game losing streak to UC Riverside with a 63-55 victory. Both wins last week were the first home victories in the respective series for CSUN since the 2006-07 season.

For the week, Sharpe shot .481 from the field while averaging 17.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.0 steals per contest.
