Orlando Johnson (Seaside, Calif./Loyola Marymount) delivered an impressive performance against No. 18 UNLV that was worthy of Big West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, although the UC Santa Barbara senior would have instead preferred the victory over the non-conference rival.
The Gauchos fell in double overtime to the Rebels by a 94-88 score on Wednesday, in an instant classic where Johnson flourished. He scored a game-high 36 points and added 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. The 6-5 guard added four assists, two blocked shots and three steals while playing 47 of a possible 50 minutes.
Johnson hit 11 of 24 floor shots, including 3 of 7 from three-point range. He also sank 11 of 16 free throw attempts.
The 36 points marked the second-highest total of his career and moved him into ninth place on the UCSB career scoring list with 1,357 points.
Others nominated: D. J. Seeley (Cal State Fullerton); Larry Anderson (Long Beach State); Eddie Miller (UC Davis); Michael Wilder (UC Irvine); Ross Rivera (Pacific)
