11 VB All-Conference Release
11/22/2011
With the announcement of the 2011 Big West Conference women's volleyball annual awards, two schools shared the top honors. Cal Poly's Jennifer Keddy was named 2011 Big West Women's Volleyball Player of the Year and Cal State Northridge was represented twice with Casey Hinger tabbed 2011 Big West Women's Volleyball Freshman of the Year and Jeff Stork collecting the 2011 Big West Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year honor.
Aside from pacing the Big West Conference with a 4.06 kill average, Keddy ranked in the league's Top 10 in three categories. The 6-4 middle blocker currently sits third in hitting percentage with a .339 clip and blocks with a 1.22 average. Keddy's 4.85 points per set average ranks first in the Big West and 22nd in the nation. Hailing from Missoula, Mont., Keddy collected three Big West Player of the Week awards this season, with the most recent coming this week after tallying her eighth double-double of the season (16 kills,11 digs). Earlier this season, she became the first Mustang to earn Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) National Player of the Week accolades. She did so back on Oct. 18, after posting a pair of career-highs with 22 kills and 17 digs. Keddy is the second Cal Poly player to earn the Big West Player of the Year award after former Mustang Kylie Atherstone picked up consecutive player of the year honors in 2006 and 2007.
Hinger has definitely been a wonderful addition to the Cal State Northridge women's volleyball roster as the freshman standout led the Matadors with a .288 hitting percentage, placing her ninth in the Big West. She also ranks fourth in the conference with a 1.14 blocks per set average. Her efforts helped Cal State Northridge register one of the most successful seasons in the past decade with a 9-7 league mark to capture third place. The Fullerton, Calif., native grabbed Big West Player of the Week honors, for the week ending Nov. 6, after leading her team to a pair of conference sweeps. Hinger becomes the second Cal State Northridge player to receive Big West Freshman of the Year honors with Angela Hupp receiving the first award for the Matadors back in 2006.
Stork guided Cal State Northridge to one of the most successful volleyball seasons the school has witnessed in recent memory. The Matadors concluded the 2011 Big West Conference season with a 9-7 mark, which is their highest league win total since 2004 when the squad tallied an 11-7 record. The Matadors, which were picked to finish eighth in the Big West in the Coaches Preseason Poll, ended the conference season with sole possession of third place, the highest for a Matador team since the 2003 squad finished tied for second. In his 10th year at the helm, the Matadors also notched their highest overall win total since 2004 with a 15-13 mark. Stork becomes the first Cal State Northridge head coach to receive Big West Womens Volleyball Coach of the Year accolades.
Eight teams were represented on the first team with Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara leading the charge with three selections apiece. The 2011 Big West Champions, Long Beach State, earned two nods, along with Cal Poly, UC Davis and UC Riverside. Cal State Fullerton and Pacific garnered one All-Big West First Team member each.
Eight of the 16 players selected for 2011 All-Big West First Team have all been on the elite list before, with senior Caitlin Ledoux headlining the first team with her fourth-consecutive honor. The outside hitter from Phelan, Calif., becomes just the seventh four-time recipient in conference history and third Long Beach State athlete to earn the same recognition. UC Irvine's Kari Pestolesi was the most recent four-time honoree, grabbing the distinction from 2007-10. Cal State Fullerton's Kayla Neto and UC Santa Barbara's Stacey Schmidt each collected their third honor, while Kristina Graven (Cal Poly), Haliegh Hampton (Long Beach State), Jennifer Keddy (Cal Poly), Betsy Sedlak (UC Davis) and Allison Whitson (UC Davis) each claiming their second first team accolade.
