This Week in the Big West - October 3-9, 2011
UC Irvine, Pacific San Diego Bound
The UC Irvine and Pacific cross country teams are heading south for the Triton Classic hosted by UC San Diego Saturday, Oct. 8. The women's 6K kicks off the meet at 9:00 a.m. and is followed by the men's 8K at 9:50 am. Last year, the Pacific women's program, paced by Melisa Hopper's time of 25:09.2, finished 10th at the event. UC Irvine did not participate in the Invitational last year.
The Anteaters are coming off a weekend where split squads competed in the Bill Dellinger Invitational and Pomona-Pitzer Invite while Pacific took the week off after participating in the Stanford Invitational Sept. 24.
Titans Add Vanguard Invitational To Schedule
Cal State Fullerton is gearing up for the 22nd Annual Vanguard Invitational this Saturday at the Fairview Park in Costa Mesa, Calif. The women are slated to run a 5K while the men are scheduled for an 8K in the event that gets underway at 9:00 a.m. Host Vanguard won the men's event in 2010 and Azusa Pacific picked up the womens title.
A Look Ahead
While this week showcases a very light schedule, next week is jam-packed with four events taking place - VS Athletics/Cal Poly Invite, Northridge Invitational, Bronco Invitational and Pre-National Invitational. All nine schools are schedule to compete in at least one of the listed events, while a handful of teams will display split squads to accommodate the multiple events.
The following is a sneak peek of next's week's schedule: 2011 VS Athletics/Cal Poly Invite - Cal Poly; Northridge Invitational - Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine; Bronco Invitational - Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Riverside and Pacific; Pre-National Invitational - UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara.
Hall Tops The Big West
UC Riverside's Chad Hall posted the fastest time of the season in the men's 8K last weekend at the Bill Dellinger Invitational with a career-best time of 23:18.91. His impressive showing landed him a third place finish at Oregon's home event, while leading the Highlanders to a fifth-place team finish.
Highlanders Snag Weekly Honors With Career-Best Performances
UC Riverside's Chad Hall and Jaasmin Pina both had impressive showings at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, earning them Big West Men's and Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors. This is the second award of the season for Hall and the first for Pina.
Hall finished third at the Bill Dellinger Invitational after running a career-best time of 23:18.91 on the 8K course to lead the UC Riverside mens cross country team to a fifth place finish out of nine teams. The senior from Big Bear, Calif., was just 0.03 seconds back of second place and eight seconds behind the winner, Southern Utahs Cameron Levins (23:10.51).
Pina also ran a career-best at the meet, clocking in a time of 17:29.66 in the women's 5K to finish 27th. The junior from Long Beach, Calif., was the top finisher of the three Big West schools participating in the event. The Highlanders went on to place eighth out of 10 teams.
