Big West Heads To New Meet In Pacific Northwest
The Bill Dellinger Invitational, hosted by the University of Oregon, is the most popular cross country event this weekend as three Big West Conference teams are slated for the meet. Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine and UC Riverside head to the Pacific Northwest to compete in Saturday's meet. Joining the trio in Eugene, Ore., are nationally-ranked Oregon, Idaho, Oregon State (W), Portland (W), Portland State, Southern Utah, Wichita State and Wisconsin.
In 2010, Oregon swept the fifth annual Bill Dellinger Invitational in Alton Baker Park. There was no Big West Conference representation at last year's event.
Along with competing in the Bill Delinger Invitational on October 1, the UC Irvine Anteaters will also be sending a squad to the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Claremont, Calif. The men's 8K race will start at 7:45 a.m., followed by the women's 6K race starting at 8:30 a.m. Approximately 170 runners are expected in each race. Also competing in the third annual meet is Big West foe Cal State Northridge, along with Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State San Marcos, Elmhurst, Champan, Cal Tech, Cal Lutheran, Claremont, La Verne, Occidental, Redlands, Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer.
Last season the Anteater men placed second out of 10 teams, while the women also notched a second place result.
Big West Explosive At Stanford Invitational
UC Davis' Jon Peterson shined last week at the Stanford Invitational, placing third with a time of 23:22. His time not only guided the Aggies to a sixth-place finish in the 28-team field, it elevated him to first in the Big West's top times.
As a team, UC Santa Barbara men earned a third-place finish, the highest Big West team at the Stanford Invitational. Jeremy Acosta finished 16th with a time of 24:25 to lead the Gauchos and was followed by Juan Paredes and Anthony Masci, who placed 22nd and 23rd respectively.
On the women's side, UC Davis and Cal Poly had excellent showings in the Bay Area meet that featured nationally-ranked programs. The Aggies nabbed second place in the 32-team field and the Mustangs were directly behind in third place.
Mustangs Sweep Weekly Honors
The men's and women's Cal Poly cross country teams put up excellent showings at their respective events, with the help of David Cardona Leanne Fogg. For their efforts, Cardona was named Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week and Fogg was tabbed Big West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
Cardona ran a time of 24:19 in the 8K at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneaplois, Minn., which featured a handful of nationally-ranked teams. The junior from Torrance, Calif., was the highest Big West finisher at the event.
While the men's 'A' team competed in the midwest, the women's team traveled to the Bay Area for the Stanford Invitational, were Fogg placed 10th at the elite event. The senior from Santa Rosa, Calif., ranked first among Big West contenders with a time of 20:57.
