Highlanders Host UC Riverside Invitational This Weekend
The UC Riverside cross country team is hosting its first meet of the season on Saturday, Sept. 17, the UC Riverside Invitational. The four events take place at the UC Riverside Agricultural Operations (Ag/Ops) Course, home of the 2011 Big West Cross Country Championship. The women's 6K kicks off the Invitational with a 7:30 a.m. start time and is followed by the men's 'A' 8K at 8:15 a.m. The women's 5K is slated for 9:00 a.m. with the men's 'B' 8K following at 9:30 a.m. Results of the days event will be posted at www.gohighlanders.com.

Along with host UC Riverside, Big West members Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara will be visiting the Inland Empire this weekend. Cal Lutheran, Cal Baptist, Cal Tech, Chapman, Claremont, Cal State San Marcos, Loyola Marymount and Vanguard, along with a handful of other schools, will also be attending the UC Riverside Invitational. Tickets for the meet are $5 for 12 and older, while kids 11 and under are free.

Long Beach State Visits San Diego State
The 49ers head to southern California to compete in the 67th annual Aztec Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 17, at historic Balboa Park. The first of five races is set to start at 8 a.m. The womens open 5K starts things off at 8:00 a.m., and will be followed by the 8:30 a.m. womens invitational (5K). The mens invite, which is an 8K, gets underway at 9:00 a.m., with the mens open (8K) to follow at 9:30 a.m.

Pacific Heads To The Bay
Oakland, Calif., is the destination for the Pacific womens cross country team this weekend as it gears up for the Mill Cross Country Invite hosted by Mills College. The start time for the 6K is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. The Tigers, headlined by Katie Castros time of 23:21, are coming off a 5th place finish at the Humboldt Invite.

Aggie Women Win Hornet Jamboree
Sarah Sumpter and Alycia Cridebring led the way for UC Davis cross country as four women finished in the top-10 on Saturday, claiming victory at the Sacramento State Hornet Jamboree. The women finished with 33 points and edged runner-up California by only one point to take the team title. Sacramento State finished third with 69 points.

In her first competition since the 2009 season, Sumpter finished third overall, clocking in at 17:15, and was UC Davis' top finisher. Cridebring followed in fourth place with a time of 17:46 while Kristine Lozoya was sixth in her debut race for UC Davis. She finished with a time of 17:51.

Regional Awareness
Both the Cal Poly men's and women's teams pace the Big West conference in the USTFCCCA West Region poll. The Mustang women nabbed the seventh slot and are followed by UC Davis in eighth place. The 49ers of Long Beach State claimed the 15th spot in the west region.

On the men's side, Cal Poly, the only team to make a move in this week's poll, sits ninth to lead the pack. Long Beach State holds steady in 12th place with UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara falling behind the Aggies in the 13th and 14th slot.

Nelson, Sumpter Run Away With Big West Accolades
UC Irvines Rex Nelson claimed this week's Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week award, while UC Davis' Sarah Sumpter collected Big West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors.

Competing in the Anteaters home event, the Asics/UCI Invitational, Nelson finished eighth among 148 runners with a time of 25:31.5 in the 8K. The Costa Mesa, Calif., native led UC Irvine to a fourth-place finish in the 13-team field.

Sumpter blew away her competition in her first collegiate race since the 2010 track & field season over the weekend. She placed third in the Hornet Jamboree 5K with a time of 17:15, guiding the Aggies to a team victory.
