UC Irvine Sweeps Weekly Awards

5/23/2011

UC Irvine picked up its second Big West Pitcher of the Week accolade in May with this week's selection of Matt Summers, while Christian Ramriez nabbed the fourth Big West Player of the Week award for the Anteaters this season.

Ramirez hit .538 with seven hits and seven RBI to lead UC Irvine to a 3-1 week and tie a season-high seven-game win streak. Ramirez posted multiple-hits in three of the four games and posted a career-high four RBI against USC. He doubled and tripled in the midweek game against the Trojans, driving in two runs in each of the at-bats to lead the Anteaters to a home-and-home sweep over the Trojans.

The Santa Ana, Calif., native added two hits, a sacrifice and an RBI in the series opener against UC Riverside. In the middle game, Ramirez drove in the team's first two runs with his second double of the week and a sacrifice fly that tied the game and the Anteaters went on to clinch the series with a 3-2 win. He also delivered defensively with a diving catch on a two-out sinking line drive in the eighth to halt a Highlander rally. Sunday, the centerfielder added a single and reached safely in two of three plate appearances.

Summers hurled his first career complete-game, pitching a two-hit shutout against UC Riverside to earn his ninth win of season. Summers retired 16 in a row to start the game before surrendering his first single in the Highlanders' sixth. UC Riverside added another hit in the seventh but neither runner advanced past first base. Summers faced 29 batters and tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts. The right-hander used 92 pitches and did not allow a walk in the win.
