UC Davis, Pacific And Quartet Of Individuals Advance to NCAA Regionals

5/9/2011

The NCAA announced the selections for the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regionals and Big West Champion UC Davis and Pacific received a bid into the regional, along with four other Big West players who advanced to the postseason as individuals.

Cal Poly's Geoff Gonzalez is competing in the central regional and Nick Delio (Cal State Northridge), Glen Scher (UC Santa Barbara) and Jerry He (UC Irvine) were selected to the west regional.

The Aggies, who received an automatic bid to the postseason after winning the Big West Conference Championship, head to the Omni Tucson National Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz. The regional tournament will be held May 19-21 at the par 72, 7,094-yard course.

On the back of a strong 2010-11 season, the Pacific golf team earned a berth into the NCAA tournament as the Tigers head to the west regional at The Farms Golf Club in San Diego, Calif. Pacific advances to the tournament for the first time since the 2001-02 season when Pacific played its way all the way to the championship rounds.

Gonzalez makes his third NCAA appearance of his career next week as he heads to the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo., for the central regional. The University of Colorado is hosting the 54-hole tournament on a course that measures 7,676 yards with a par of 72.

The Big West trio of Delio, Scher and He stay close to home as they join in San Diego, Calif., for west regional action. Like Gonzalez, Delio is making his third trip to the NCAA's. Just a season ago, Delio claimed individual medalist honors at the NCAA Southwest Regional, advancing him to the NCAA Championships.

Scher, who led the Gauchos in shots per round average at 73.79, became the first UCSB player in nearly 10 years to win a spring tournament.

He, who finished 19th at the Big West Conference Championship, has a 74.15 average this season. He has four top-20 finishes this year.

Six regional tournaments will be conducted. Thirteen teams and ten individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.

The NCAA Division I Men's Golf National Championship will be conducted May 31-June 5 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla. Oklahoma State is the host institution.
